What if 2-D died during Phase 3, and the 2-D we're seeing is a ghost? Such as in Phase 1, Del was the blue ghost that told everyone to think for themselves. In phase 4, 2-D is the blue ghost that is telling everyone to think for themselves.
2-D actually died when he was eaten by Massive Dick. But he came back as a ghost, and is possibly hiding from the Grim Reaper now.

In Phase 3, 2-D's eyes were white because he was stressed, because a whale was always looking after him, and he was forced to sing for an album, without his medication. But....Why are his eyes always white now? In LOTS of artworks for Phase 4, 2-D is seen with pure white eyes. What does he have to be stressed about? The end of the world? But in the music videos, he looks pretty happy. Especially in Strobelight. Well.....This is because 2-D's dead, and his white eyes are proof of that. Because Del also had white eyes. It's true that Russel does, but Russel is possessed by ghosts. White eyes always mean that ghosts are involved. And there's more evidence supporting that 2-D is dead right now, instead of being possessed. And getting eaten in the beginning is pretty strong proof.
But his eyes are sometimes black, especially in the music videos!
As I mentioned earlier. 2-D is hiding from the grim reaper, if his eyes were always white, the old Grim Reaper will catch up on him. Also, I'm sure he and the rest of the band knows that it's not good if the fanbase found out that their lead vocalist is dead. The black eyes are fake, probably just cosplayer's makeup. Also "Charger" as references to ghosts.
Del was very glitchy, the moment he'd come up, he looks like a "hologram". As well as sometimes the whole video will make a glitch effect, at least in Clint Eastwood.
This phase has been the most glitchiest. The album cover has had a "Glitch" effect, you can get it on a T-Shirt. A lot of the arts that Jamie would upload to his instagram, especially the previews, have a glitch filter over them. This is because Gorillaz' lead vocalist is dead, which is really messing up. Since 2-D isn't supposed to be around, he's supposed to be resting right now.
Not only is he similar to Del in those ways, but there's another way to. And it's important. Notice how Russel has been VERY sleepy in Phase 4? In Saturnz Barz, he wanted to sleep. In Strobelight, he was sleeping and pretty much completely absent from the video. Russel is so tired because he's supporting 2-D's spirit.
Much like how Russel had to support his best friend's spirit in Phase 1, and how every time Del pops out, Russel falls asleep. Russel has to support his best friend's spirit in Phase 4. And it takes a lot out of him, which is why he always wants to sleep now.
But how would this end? I don't know how. I have some theories on how this theory would end, if true. If Damon ever wants to quit Gorillaz, and pass it on to someone else. It's possible that then 2-D's spirit will be laid to rest.
Or Murdoc could be finding a way to bring 2-D back from the dead this phase.

Murdoc is seen in this picture, bringing dead singers back from the....Uh, dead. So maybe it's likely that he's testing it out on these guys, for when he has to bring 2-D back. This photo will also be relevant in another theory in this book.
