"Brendan... Brendan honey wake up now." I groaned and rolled over, trying to tuck the covers back around me as they were pulled away. The soft female voice was rousing me from my slumber gently but I resisted it.

"I don't want to get up, mommy." I mumbled. Then I rolled over and saw the sympathetic gaze of my nanny, Miss Gloria.

"Aw honey, your mom is busy this morning. Come on now. You don't want to be late for school." She smiled at me and I timidly smiled back. I could not get too comfortable with Miss Gloria because she would eventually be replaced with another nanny. I sighed and got up out of bed.

I look at the clock. The bright numbers say it's only 4am. It will be hours before I have to work. I just lay there in the silence and wait for it to be time to get up. Not a soul stirs in the house. Not until 6am. Then I hear the maids creeping the halls and sigh to myself. I slowly raise myself from the bed, staring at the room that is both mine and strange to me at the same time.

I am working in my parents' company now. I insisted on starting from the bottom so I could learn everything there was to know about the jobs I would be in charge of someday. It was boring office work, but I really didn't mind the routine. I found the company during the day rather pleasant and liked keeping busy. I just wished I couldn't hear the whispers when my back was turned.

It wasn't enough for some people that I studied at the most prestigious schools and graduated ahead of schedule. No, to them I would always be a freeloader on my parents' coattails. It was frustrating and disheartening at times. I had to keep going though. Keep going or break into pieces. I refused to give them the satisfaction of seeing me fail.

I refused.
