Woebegone – Chapter 3

“Hey kid…” I heard someone calling out to me.

                “Hello?” a familiar one.

“Can you hear me…?” I can’t seem to remember whose.

“Wake up!” a female’s voice boomed in my head as I felt my body being shaken back and forth.

I slowly opened my eyes. My memory was still hazy from the events last night… What happened? Why was I lying on a sofa in the staff lounge?! The doctors and nurses were staring at me like I was some kind of zombie that rose from his grave. To save myself from any more embarrassment, I got up to my feet.

Someone opened the window blinds, causing the sun’s warm light to penetrate through, making me squint. The first thing that flashed in my mind was my sister. “Where’s Tiffany? How is she doing? Is she okay? Is she awake yet? Are we getting out of here anytime soon?” Numerous questions were dying to be asked; but for some reason, I was at a loss for words.

“Finally, you’re awake,” a female doctor smiled at me. It was her who tried to wake me up.

“Where — Where am I?” I asked, my anxiety meter beginning to rise up again.

“Worry not, boy,” she reassured, patting my back. “You’re at Asclepia Medical Center, building B.”

Building B? Then where’s building A? I ran towards the window for a look-see. For some reason, I was no longer in the other lesser grand building that that crazy male doctor assigned to me and gave me one heck of a night. Suddenly, I felt a sudden pain hit me, rendering me weak. The same female doctor caught me before I wobbled onto the ground like a pancake.

“You’re still hurt from last night’s events,” she told me as she assisted me in standing up properly. “It seems that door smack knocked you out cold.”

“Huh?” I replied, completely fazed. Door smack? What? My memory was still hazy. Then to my dismay, the same jerky doctor from yesterday entered the room. He still wore that annoying smile on his face that gave me the temptation to rip it off. He drew towards the female doctor who stood beside me.

“Gotta tell you, er… Dr. Blaire,” he said to her in a shaky tone. “Was just doing my job. At least tell me before moving a patient to another building!”

“Please, Nolan,” Dr. Blaire snapped back at him with her arms crossed. “That building’s not meant for... for this child.”

“I’m not a child…” I tried not to interrupt, but being called a child or a boy grated my nerves. “I’m sixteen.”

Dr. Nolan laughed at my petty comment and ruffled my hair. Great, now I really look like I just woke up! He asked for my name, and I told him. Travis Oliver. Was it that hard to remember? Wait, didn’t I tell him that on the first day? Forgetful much? Didn’t expect that from a doctor like him…
