"Seriously," groaned Matthew. "Seriously," Ben mocked. "I'll probably fail tryouts anyway," Matthew reassured himself. Ben snorted, "you better not.". "Or?" challenged Matthew. Ben rolled his eyes, "See you after tryouts.". Ben walked back the way he came. Matthew looked at the academy. It was an old castle rumored to have belonged to a powerful wizard, who went mad after years of seclusion and eventually, turned himself into a lich. Matthew gulped and walked towards the drawbridge. Suddenly, a leg kicked out from behind a tree, tripping him. Matthew groaned and got up. He looked at his assailant and groaned as he recognized him. "What do we have here," Carter sneered. Someone walked behind Matthew and kicked him. "A whiny kid who thinks he has what it takes to be a wizard," Thomas snickered. "What are you guys doing here," Matthew blurted. "We're trying out of course," Carter smirked, "The only difference is that we're actually going to make it.". Matthew rolled his eyes. Of course, his childhood tormentors just had to try out for the same school he was trying out for. Thomas and Carter both came from very rich families, so they felt that they had the right to treat everyone else like lesser beings. Carter leaned in closer to Matthew's ear and whispered, "see you at tryouts.". He cackled and shoved Matthew back. "Leave him alone!", shouted a voice to Matthew's right. All of them turned to see a freckled half-elf about Matthew's age staring defiantly at them, but it was obvious that her tanned skin was shaking in fear. Carter laughed and said, "as you wish.". He then left, motioning for Thomas to do the same. Thomas followed Carter, but not before spitting at Matthew. Matthew wiped the saliva off his face and groaned in pain as he tried to get up. The half-elf ran up to him and touched his ribs. "Ow," Matthew gasped. "Sorry," the half-elf quickly said, "it must be broken, here.". she sprinkled some glowing yellow powder on his ribs and put her hand on his chest again. Her hand started to glow as his pain numbed. "Healing spell?" he asked. "Yup" she grinned as she put out her hand, "I'm Calista.". Matthew took her hand and shook it, "Matthew.". It took him a few minutes before he realized that he was staring. "Sorry," he flustered. "For what?", Calista raised an eyebrow. "Um, nothing" he stuttered, then decided to change the subject. "Thanks for the save," Matthew beamed. "It was nothing," she blushed, and pushed her dirty blonde hair away from her face, "see you at tryouts!". She skipped towards the gate. "Tryouts, right," he sighed and slowly made his way towards the gate.
