Chapter 4: The Ring
Jack's P.O.V

Great, he passed out. He didn't get up. I looked at the ring. It was beautifully crafted. It also had a beautiful blue gem in the middle. I walked away very quietly. I went home after my shift. I decided to call Barry.
"Hey Barry." I said over the phone.
"Hey Jack, so what are you up too?"
"Nothing, but I got a gift for Heather."
"Really? What is it?"
"It is a ring."
"Are you going to propose?! Can I be your best man?!"
"Barry calm down. It is not an engagement ring."
"Oh. Is it just a gift for a random day?"
"No. Tomorrow is are two month anniversary."
"Oh! I forgot about that."
"I got this ring from a guy I knew."
"What do you mean?"
"This guy gave me.....uh....his ring." I lied.
"Mhmmm.....well I got to go. Talk to you later." Barry said then hung up. I put my phone on the table and went to sleep.

The next day, I wrapped up the ring in a little box, then left to find Heather. I went to the juice bar because she has a part time job there. I walked in and saw a tall guy talking to Cassie.
"Hey Cassie, do you know where Heather is? Oh, and hi, my name is Jack." I said to the tall guy. He just gave a disgusted look. His face seemed familiar to me, but I can't put my finger on it. Oh well.
"Um, I think Heather might be in the dressing rooms." Cassie said while thinking.
"Oh yeah! Riley, this is-"
"I already know who he is." Riley said while cutting off Cassie. The way he said it made me think he didn't like me. I held out my hand.
"Nice to meet you Riley." I said as friendly as I can. He just stared at me. I put my hand back to my side.
"Why do you need Heather for?" Cassie asked. I smiled.
"I am giving her a gift." I said. Riley rolled his eyes and stared at his phone. I ignored him.
"What is it?" Cassie asked. I pulled out the box and opened it.
"It is a ring." I said. Riley looked up and his eyes went huge. He immediately snatched the box.
"Give it back!" I shouted. Then I noticed that Riley had a similar ring on. Uh oh.
"Where did you get this?" Riley asked bitterly.
"A guy gave it to me." I lied. He put the box in his pocket.
"You're lying." he said. Wait, how did he know?
"No I'm not!" I said defensively.
"No, you are LYING. My friend, Reef, told me that some guy took his ring. That looks like his ring, and you're a guy." Riley added. Cassie looked at me.
"Is that true Jack?" Cassie asked me. I shook my head even though it is true.
"No, who are you going to trust? Me, who you've known since like kids, or Riley, a guy you just met?" I asked. Cassie stood there uncomfortably.
"Riley, I think you should give it back." Cassie said. Thank you!
"Why?!" he said.
"Because it is a gift for his girlfriend! Also, it might not be Reef's ring." Cassie added. Riley still didn't take it out of his pocket.
"Dude, give it back." I pleaded.
"I'll get Reef, and see if you took it or not. Okay?" he suggested and walked off. I gulped. Then Riley came back with Reef. Reef looked awful. He was covered in sand. He had scratches and other stuff. I felt bad leaving him in the sand.
"Reef, did Jack take your moon ring?" Riley asked. Reef gave me a stare.
"Yeah, he did. Also, he left me in the sand when I blacked out." Reef answered. I gulped.
"I'm sorry that I left you in the sand." I said while looking at the ground. He held out his hand.
"I want my ring back." he said.
"I want to give it for my girlfriend." I pleaded, so Reef would change his mind and let me give it to Heather.
"No, I want my ring back, and besides, she won't be safe with it." Reef said. I looked confused. He snickered.
"You have no idea what that ring could do." Reef said while smirking.
"What does it do?" I asked.
"We can't say." Riley said while giving the box to Reef. I quickly grabbed the box.
"Dude! If you want Heather dead, then I suggest you give her the ring!" Reef shouted. Wait, what did he just say? I don't care but I have to give Heather this. Then Reef started to something to do something with his hand. Then the sink burst. Water flew straight at me. It felt like bricks hitting me. I realized that I have been hit by water. I started to run, but Reef kept me in place. I fell to the ground.
"Nice tail you got there." Reef said mockingly. I gave him a glare.
"What do you want?" I asked.
"What do I want? Let's see...I want my ring, I want my pod back, I want my friends back, also, I want you dead." He said with a touch of venom in it.
"Why do you want me dead?! And what is a pod?!" I asked. Reef bent down to the floor. He raised his hand. I waited for the slap, but nothing. I saw he was doing something with his hands again. I felt extreme heat. Then I saw there were no more water, and my tail had dried.
"What just happened?" I asked. Reef looked up at me.
"I used my powers." he said very simply.
"Wait, you have powers too? That is cool!" I said. He slapped me.
"You having powers, is a threat to my kind." Reef said while picking up the box and taking out the ring. He threw the box on the ground, and put on the ring.
"Your kind?" I asked again.
"Yes, when you fell into that pool on Mako, my friends and I were celebrating a ceremony and we had to take the blame for letting a land boy falling into the moon pool and we got out casted." He said.
"Also, a pod, in my definition, is a group or family of mermans or mermaids." He added. There were more. I also noticed that Reef had a strong American accent. I knew that he might be near America.
"Reef, why do you have an American accent?" I asked.
"Because at one time my pod was in the Pacific Ocean near California, and I was born in the Pacific Ocean reefs, near California. That's why I have an American accent." Reef answered. I guess that is how he got his name. Riley, Blue, and Kahuna had Australian accents and Reef's accent just stood out. I nodded.
"I'm really sorry for the ring thing." I said. Reef just looked at me and walked out.
"The only way to make it up to him, is to give up your tail." Riley said then exited. The only way to befriend Reef, is to give up my tail?
