3:10P.M., After School
"So, what do you want to do?" Steven asks sitting in the seat next to me. I look at him confused and he just stares at me oblivious to my confusion.
"What do you mean?" I ask as I take my ear bud out and look at him.
"Remember we were going to do something after school." He remarks smiling at someone behind me. I turn and see his friends all look at him.
"Seriously?" I ask turning back to him and he looks at me again.
"Sorry." He says smiling at me. "What would you like to do?" Now he looks right into my eyes begging for my forgiveness like a puppy that made a mess.
"Don't care." I say.
"Well, my car is in the shop right now getting the engine fixed so I can't drive." He says.
"I can drive." I say.
"Why don't you drive to..."
"Want to go to the mall?" I ask as we turn down the road where our stop is.
"Sure." He says as the bus comes to a stop. We both stand up and walk off.
"Thank you." I say to the driver then get off the bus and walk down the road, making him jog to catch up.
"So, what time do you want to go?" He asks.
"Want to go right now?" He lives two houses away from me so I used to hang out with him when we were little.
"Sure. I just have to drop my stuff off quick." He says.
"I'll meet you at my house in five." I say as he walks up his driveway only turning when he reaches the door.
"Meet you by your car." He yells after me and I nod then walk to my house while looking through my phone. I get a email from a teacher.
I walk into my house and straight up the stairs to my room. I throw my bag on the ground then grab my purse and walk out of my room with my phone in hand.
"Are you home?" My mom yells from downstairs. I walk toward the stairs and see her head walking toward the stairs.
"Yup." I say. "I'm leaving though."
"You just got home." She says stopping in front of the stairs.
"And?" I say. "I'm hanging out with someone"
"Are you lying?" She says and I look at her starting to feel pissed as I walk down the stairs. "You don't hang out with people. You refer to hanging out with people as a boring interaction that people expect from you."
"I'm actually hanging out with someone. They wanted to hang out and I wanted to go to the mall anyway so invited them to go." I say.
"Someone asked you to hang out and you said yes then hoped they would forget didn't you?" She asks and I nod then grab my keys off the counter.
"See you later." I say.
"Did you eat today?" She asks as I walk to the front door.
"Ya."
"What?" She says.
"A bunch of bullshit people at school fed me." I open the door and leave, walking to my car where Steven is waiting. "Ready?"
"Yup." He says. I walk to my truck and unlock it so he can get in. I back up slowly out of the driveway then drive off. "How was your day?"
"Oh so now we have average conversations like normal humans." I say and he laughs. "What?"
"You are just so funny. You always have to have something smart to say about everything." He says and I look at him. "Its not a bad thing."
"Isn't it though?" I say then turn the car.
"Anyway, how have you been?"
"I've been surviving lately. How about you?" I ask.
"I mean my engine broke over the weekend so not the best." He says.
"Why doesn't your girlfriend drive you to school so you don't have to take the bus?"
"We broke up like middle of summer." He says.
"Sorry." I say.
"What about you? How is your dating life?" I look at him as I pull up at a red light.
"Not as good as yours. But I'm fine with it."
"Why? Don't you want to feel loved?" He asks and I look at him.
"I can't tell if you're joking or not." I say as he just looks at me as the light turns green. I put my foot on the gas and look at the road. "You know what, unlike you I don't need a person in my life to make me feel complete. I am not arrogant like you and need attention twenty four seven."
"I'm not arrogant for wanting love." He says.
"Aren't you though. The last time you had a girlfriend you even told me you just loved the idea of being in love. You didn't love her. You just liked the thought of being in love." I say turning into the mall parking lot.
"That was different. I didn't know what it felt like to be in love. I thought I did love her but I was just really good friends with her." He says. "That's why I ended it as soon as I found out."
"Okay whatever." I say parking. "If you want to call that fake love or whatever you are supposing then you do that but I think you just felt like breaking that poor girls heart."
"No didn't." He says.
"Well you know what you did do? You made her hate me when I didn't even do anything to her. Your mistake caused more shit to happen in my life."
"What are you talking about?" He asks dumbfounded that I figured everything out even though the pieces were laid out in front of me.
"She hates me because she thinks you dumped her to go out with me." I look at him and he looks me in the eye with his piercing brown eyes.
"Sorry..."
"Whatever. Lets just go." Rage was filling inside me and I was regretting hanging out with him. What did I get myself into?
