Teagan's POV:

I push through the double doors of the McDonalds, holding back a groan as the stifling hot air hits me like a sledgehammer.

I just need to get out of here. That boy Calum asks to many questions, and he was really starting to make me feel uncomfortable.

I plop down on the curb by the highway, contemplating if I should start hitch hiking or use the pay phone outside the McDonalds.

No, I can't use the pay phone. I have no one to call except my mom and I can't do that. I told her I'd be fine on my own, and I will be. I'll show her I don't need any help.

I grasp my bags and trudge back to the McDonalds, shoving all the loose change I have in to the rusty vending machine outside the doors. I buy as many water bottles as I can, put them in my duffle, and start walking.

"I'm going to walk to Florida."

"No one can stop me."

"I can do this."

I psych myself up as I begin to walk down the highway. We can't be to far between rest stops anyway. I'll sleep in gas station restrooms or something.

People have done this before right?

An hour later I was definitely regretting ever starting out alone. Only 3 or 4 cars had passed me the entire time and they didn't even give me a second glance. I was hoping that me being a girl would give people some sort of pitty so that I wouldn't have to ask for a ride, someone would volunteer it for me.

Silly, silly Teagan.

The heat starts to really sink in as sweat seeps through my shirt. I look both ways before stripping it off and splashing myself with some of my precious water and putting on a tank top.

"At least I'll get a nice tan," I think, pulling my Yankees cap lower over my eyes.

Just as i'm about to sit down on the side of the road and wait for another car to come by, I hear brakes and a large bus rolls in to my peripheral vision.

It has to be the ugliest thing I've ever seen. A large yellow school bus, old by he looks of it, hisses to a stop. It's covered in black graffiti and looks about as old as my great-grandma.

Sketchy to say the least.

"Teagan?" I hear a vaguely familiar voice call, as I tip my head down and stride faster.

"Hey pull forward Ashton, keep up with her!" I hear faintly as my pace quickens.

The bus rolls at a slow pace beside me as I desperately try to ignore it.

"Teagan, hey! It's me, Calum!" I hear a boy call, as the sound of a car door opening follows his statement.

I feel a large hand grab my shoulder.

"Hey Teagan, what are you doing here all alone? I thought you were taking the bus," Calum asks, a concerned look in his eye as a finally make eye contact with him.

"I'm walking to the bus stop?" My statement comes out as more of a question as I jerk my shoulder out of his grasp.

"You missed your bus didn't you!" I hear one of the boys - Luke I think - call from the window of the drug bus.
