Vanity

Snuggled up with my body pillow, I took a mid-morning nap as I was swept over with sudden fatigue, from what? I don't even know but I laid down for a bit and was interrupted by knocking on my door. At first I ignored it, hiding my face in the pillow and praying I was just hearing things but when the knocking persisted, I sat up and let out a deep exhale having to face the reality that someone was at the door. What if I just stay quiet and they leave? There was that idea but when the knocking got louder, I got the memo that whoever was at the door wasn't going to leave any time soon. I swear it better not be Trellis again- checking my phone there were some messages from him but those were from last night that I didn't answer because I passed out but nothing else indicating someone was going to be stopping by.

I grabbed the satin white leopard print robe that hung on the back of my door and tied it in the front as I made my way down the hallway. Cracking open the door with just my head peering through said crack, I almost didn't believe it was CJ standing on the other side. I had to blink a good six or seven times before it fully registered in my brain that I should probably say something instead of just stare.

"What do you want?" I muttered with some irritation in my voice I hope he clearly picked up on.

"Haven't seen you in a minute." He spoke back casually as he leaned up against the door frame looking down at me with an amused smile on his face.

"Yeah, you fucked me and left like a day after so why are you here now?"

"Don't start that petty broad drama, you're not like that and you know it. That wasn't the case, I don't use you for sex." You painted that kind of a picture but whatever. "Some things came up and it kept me occupied for some time but now I'm here 'cause I missed you." He said and I rolled my eyes, opening the door to let him come inside before all the heat in the apartment escaped out the door. "Were you still sleeping? It's almost noon." He asked when he gave me a full body look down.

"You made it seem like that's what it was. You were calling, texting and visiting everyday up until we slept with each other and then you just fell off once you got it." I snapped as I locked the door behind him. "I was up earlier but took a small nap because I was feeling fatigue. What could have possibly kept you so busy that you couldn't answer a text or call, given your whole life is based around that damn phone of yours?"

"Chill the fuck out, it had nothin' to do with butterin' you up just to get you in bed with me so drop that thought. You know damn well I've never been that type." He snapped right back with a harsh tongue. "I was handlin' some left over court business from my last charge and got caught up in it to get it done as fast as possible and now I'm through with it." He said as he watched me come and take a seat next to him on the couch, tucking my legs up underneath me and leaning up against the back of the couch with my side so I was facing him.

"Court business? You served your time and everything-"

"It's all good. I got things handled and I'm in the clear so don't trip over it."

"Did it have to do with that black binder on your kitchen table?" I asked curiously and he nodded his head instantly. "So all is figured out? You're not going back to jail are you?"

"No I'm not. So what'chu been doin'?"

"Nothing much but I did get my old job back so I can't wait to start getting in checks. I don't want to dip anymore into my savings."

"You need money? It ain't nothin' for me to give you some." He said reaching into his pocket to pull out his wallet and I quickly placed my hand on his, indicating him to stop as I shook my head. "V, you sure? I don't want you strugglin'."
