When my eyes open again all I see is white. It's so harsh that I close my eyes again. Eventually I open them and blink to readjust. The colour subdues for me to recognise it as a roof. The next thing I hear is a continuous beeping sound, the ringing in my ears mostly gone.
I am in hospital.
I am in pain.
And I am alone.
Judging by the harsh lights in the room and no light escaping through the curtains, its nighttime or vampire daytime. I try my best to look around the room without lifting my body, afraid that if I move the pain will get worse.
There are flowers on the table next to the bed and a remote for the television. Another remote lies next to it, with a green button to signal attendance. I reach my hand out, amazed at how many tubes are connected to the one needle and press the button. My hand itself has bruises and cuts around the knuckles and bruises up my forearm that probably keep going but the hospital gown covers from my elbow up.
I only have to wait a minute before a nurse comes in. She looks really nice and genuinely happy to see me. "Oh it's so good you're awake. We thought you never would."
I frown. What? "How long have I been here?"
The nurse smiles and runs a hand softly over my forehead. "Five days."
I blink and try to sit up but she doesn't let me get far. "Don't sit up you'll just hurt yourself more. You've had a lot of injuries Rosemarie."
"Like what?" The nurse does however get the remote and presses a button so that the head of my bed begins to rise and I can sit up a little bit.
She smiles again, something I find patronising. "A lot. The doctor will come in later tonight. He tends to enjoy working at night rather than day."
I nod and watch while she plays with the monitor connected to me. "Are you in any pain?"
Yes, but I'm to proud to admit, so I shake my head. "Alright. Well I'll leave you on the same medication then and the doctor will give you a full once over later on. Do you need anything else?"
Dimitri.
"No, thank you."
Once she leaves I am thrown into a world of boredom until I remember the television. I reach over and turn it on. I never usually watch tv as for some reason I wasn't all that much of a fan of technology. I don't recognise any titles while I flip through besides 'The Simpsons' which a guy from when Lissa went to college always used to watch on his phone.
I don't really understand whats happening and know none of the characters but I watch anyway and eventually my eyes become heavy and I fall asleep.
When I open my eyes again I am greeted with the lovely site of my mother. Jeanine Hathaway sits almost awkwardly on a material chair next to my bed. It takes her a moment to realise I am awake and she smiles before wrapping her arms softly around my body. It hurts a little but I don't say anything.
"Rosemarie." She breathes into my hair
"Hey Mom." I say with a small smile. Eventually she lets me go and takes a moment to study my face. All I know is that I have a cut along my hairline that didn't feel like it had stitches only bandages.
"Look at what you have done to yourself." She shakes her head disapprovingly. "You're going to be out of action for months."
Now that worried me. I didn't want to be away from Lissa for that long. What if something happened and I wasn't there to save her? "Thanks for caring."
