“For one, he hated the summer holidays more than any other time of year. For another, he really wanted to do his homework, but was forced to do it in secret, in the dead of night. And he also happened to be a wizard.”

(Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, page 1)

Amy Pond was sick and tired of Muggle life. Sure, having a phone and internet and various other electronics was nice, but what was that if you couldn’t talk about learning a new spell or the victory of her favorite Quidditch team? And not being able to see her boyfriend or best friend definitely made the top 3 of rubbish things about it.

At least it was only two months. She laughed at the thought, about how she was looking forward to the end of summer. What teenage girl prefers school to the summer holidays? A Muggle-born, that’s who. Amy had kept a countdown to September 1 on her wall since the day she’d returned home. Granted, the fact that it was actually school did make it a little less exciting, but really, potions and charms were endlessly more fascinating than maths and science. That was the major issue with her Muggle friends, however.

She remembered the summer after her first year, when all of her friends had asked her where she’d gone. She’d tried to be vague by saying that it was just a boarding school her aunt had found for her, but when she was pressed for a name so they could write for her she had no idea what to say. She couldn’t just tell them “Oh, I’m going to a school for wizards now. I get to learn magic while you learn history and geometry.” She’d been involved in the Wizarding world for only about a year, but she still knew enough to realize that that would be bad. So Amy told them that she hadn’t bothered learning the name since she hated it and figured she’d be kicked out anyway. It took her a while to convince them of that, but making up the trouble she’d gotten into (maybe or maybe not taking some idea from what she’d done with her new friends) was too much fun. Later on she’d gotten a false name from a teacher to give to them that would still get delivered, which worked out well as long as none of them tried to Google the place.

But as much as she liked her Muggle friends, their lives seemed incredibly boring compared to the stuff that she had been doing. Whether it was just a cool new charm, a potion that most teenage girls would kill for, or the seemingly annual life-threatening event at Hogwarts. Those ranged from a Care of Magical Creatures lesson gone wrong to some wannabe Dark wizard trying to infiltrate the school. Just normal stuff like that. She always found that talking to her Wizarding friends was infinitely more interesting. Rory would always have a funny story about what was happening with his family, as they were all wizards and mayhem was bound to ensue. The Doctor was always up to something at the orphanage, and the kids there were far from behaved anyway. He’d told her before that he was certain that one of them must be a wizard, as how else could he have gotten to the top of that cupboard on his own?

A tap on her window interrupted her thoughts. Amy grinned, seeing the Doctor’s tawny owl standing on the windowsill.

“Well don’t just stand there, come on in!” she told him, grinning and opening her window a bit more. He hopped in and shook out his feathers a bit before proffering his leg for Amy to take the letter.

She took it gently and gave the owl one of the bird biscuits she’d bought in Diagon Alley the last visit. Amy smiled at the letter, remembering when they’d met last year they’d forgotten to tell Rory the right time. He’d been extremely frustrated with her and the Doctor, but they had been laughing too hard to really care. They knew he’d forgive them; he always did. It wasn’t like they hadn’t done worse, like in fourth year when they’d replaced half of his school supplies with Zonko’s joke ones. Amy swore that she didn’t know about his exam in Arithmancy was that day, but he never quite seemed to believe her.
