“The brick he had touched quivered- it wriggled- in the middle, a small hole appeared- it grew wider and wider- a second later they were facing an archway… onto a cobbled street that twisted and turned out of sight.”

(Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, page 71)

When Dean was younger, he never expected he’d actually be looking forward to going to school. He wouldn’t admit it, but he even preferred Hogwarts to home life. He had friends, as much food as he could eat, and constant support. He didn’t have much of that outside of school.

The trip to Diagon Alley couldn’t have come sooner. Dean couldn’t wait to enter back into the wizarding world, the only place he really felt he belonged. He knew Sam was just as excited as he was, though he had come with Dean and their father since Dean was a first year, he’d never really gotten to pick things out for himself.

He watched his little brother the entire trip there, noticing that he was looking at things as if he’d never seen them before. Dean knew it was kind of stupid, but he felt a rush of affection for Sam. The poor guy probably hadn’t thought he’d get to be doing this. He checked his watch, noting the time as 12:40. Cas should be here soon, he thought, smiling in anticipation.

Dean’s eyes scanned the crowd excitedly, and he grinned, spotting a familiar mess of dark hair. “Cas!”

The boy looked up, searching for the source of the voice. When his deep blue eyes met Dean’s emerald his face lit up. “Dean!”

He vaguely heard Sam sniggering behind him to himself as he ran to meet his friend, but Dean didn’t care. “Man, it’s been way too long,” he said, pulling Cas in for a hug. He couldn’t really put into words how awesome it was to see him again. Dean would never tell anyone, but he’d begun to realize that his feelings for Castiel were slowly becoming more than just platonic. That didn’t mean he’d do anything about it, however. He pulled back so he could get a good look at Castiel, chuckling when he noticed his friend seemed to finally be starting to grow up. “Nice peach fuzz,” he teased, quickly passing a finger over his friend’s cheek and considering Cas’ embarrassment a personal victory. And yeah, a bit cute.

“Dean, please,” Cas chided, moving his hand away, but his smile counteracted the seriousness of his tone. “It’s nice to see you too.” The guy was so formal sometimes. Dean fake gasped and placed a hand over his heart.

“Dude, I thought what we had was,” he faked a sob and wiped his eye, enjoying the look of confusion on Cas’ face, “special. But I guess all I’ll ever mean to you is a “nice to see you.” I don’t know if I can deal with that.” He cursed himself inwardly for almost bursting out laughing at the last sentence, thus rendering his act pointless. However, he was rewarded with a grin from Cas.

“Well, seeing as I am…” Cas dug through his pockets for a few seconds, “a prefect, I thought it was fitting. You should show me some respect.” He held out the blue and silver badge for Dean to admire, and he felt a surge of pride for his best friend.

“Prefect? Dude, that’s awesome!” Dean exclaimed happily. He wasn’t jealous, he knew he had a better chance of getting all O’s on his OWLs this year than making prefect, and he knew how much it meant to Cas. Prefect sounded boring anyway, too many rules to follow and Dean hated following the rules. Where’s the fun in that? Detention was worth it, since he and Cas could just laugh everything off.

He turned around when he noticed his father and Sam behind him.

“Hello, Mr. Winchester. I hope you’re well?” Castiel asked, nodding at Dean’s dad. Dean couldn’t keep the tiniest of smiles off his face, Cas’ politeness really was endearing.
