"It [The Great Hall] was lit by thousands and thousands of candles that were floating in midair over four long tables, where the rest of the students were sitting. These tables were laid with glittering golden plates and goblets. At the top of the hall was another long table where the teachers were sitting."

As if Dean's nerves weren't frayed enough by Sherlock, stepping out of the train it suddenly struck him that this was actually happening. Sammy was going to be Sorted. He figured he had every chance of getting into Gryffindor or Ravenclaw, and Hufflepuff was pretty respectable, a part of him was going over all the reasons why there was a chance in Slytherin. The kid was clever, both academically and not, he could be pretty crafty if the need arose, and hey, he could sneak up on Dean despite him having to be alert all his life, ever since he was four and Azazel killed their mother and set their house on fire. Dean shoved those thoughts aside and searched the crowd of students for Cas.
He noticed that everyone else was in their robes. "Son of a bitch," he whispered, making a mental note to at least pull his on over his Muggle clothing when he got the chance. More students passed by, none of them Cas. He couldn't help feeling more than a little disappointed.
"Hello, Dean."
"Son of a bitch!" he repeated, spinning around and seeing Cas standing behind him. He too was in his robes (he had filled out nicely the past summer, but Dean didn't want to admit that more than subconsciously), and his hair was mussed, likely from navigating the crowd of young students. It suited him nicely. "God, Cas, you can't just sneak up on me like that!" The guy was worse than Sam.
Castiel smiled softly. "Evidently I can, judging from your reaction to my sudden presence." Dean rolled his eyes but couldn't help sending him a grin in return.
"Damn, I missed you," Dean told him, flinging his arm around his best friend's shoulders. He heard the familiar call of "First years over here!" and was reminded of his worries from earlier. His face fell and he and Cas walked in silence to the chariots with the invisible horses, or at least that's what Dean assumed carried them. He didn't understand why some students always looked so scared. Probably Muggle-borns who didn't quite understand the Wizarding world yet.
Dean brightened and waved, spotting his friends Jo, Benny, and Charlie across the crowd. They grinned and waved back, but were quickly swept away by the other students. He allowed himself to again appear as grim as he felt.
After he and Cas had settled into one of the carts and Dean had shrugged on his robes, Castiel looked at him with a serious expression. "Dean, Sam will be fine. He's not going to be in Slytherin."
"How do you know?" he snapped, pulling his gaze away from the lights of Hogwarts shining like fireflies in the night. "He's got as good a chance as any for all of them, so maybe there's that tipping point that'll send him right into snakehood!" Cas was solemn while Dean ranted. "He's not gonna want to be in Ravenclaw with that dick Sherlock, Dad'll be disappointed if he's in Hufflepuff, and he probably won't want to be stuck in Gryffindor with his delinquent brother, so where does that leave him?" Dean didn't really have anything about the house itself; it was only his dad who mistrusted them all. Sure half of them were obnoxious dicks, but he had a few friends, no, not really friends, acquaintances in the House. And Gabriel was actually a pretty good kid. "Oh god, he's gonna be in Slytherin and Dad's gonna blame me for not raising him right even though he was the one who was supposed to be doing the raising and Sam's gonna be influenced by the bad kids and he's gonna get into some gang or something and he's gonna have to go against Dad and-"
He was interrupted by Cas' hand pressed over his mouth. Irritated, Dean licked his makeshift gag and Castiel jerked away with a soft "Ew!" before telling him gently, "Dean, I will say this again, he's not going to be in Slytherin. I've known you, and by extent him, for long enough to be certain. And even if he is, he'll find Gabriel and they can stick together. It will all be okay." He sounded so sure of himself that Dean couldn't help sending him a soft smile.
