The drive back to Blue House from the outskirts of Seoul was eerily quiet, with Sehun stealing occasional glances at Rachel, who sat beside him. As they pulled up in front of the main gate, Sehun's grip on the steering wheel tightened, his anticipation palpable. Rachel unbuckled her seatbelt, her gaze fixed on Sehun through her peripheral vision. She hesitated before speaking, unlocking the gate with trembling hands."I am sorry."The words hung in the air, freezing Rachel in place, her face drained of color.Did I hear him correctly? Did he just apologize?Sehun, not receiving any response, turned to look at her, his hands still gripping the steering wheel tightly as he awaited her reaction. He took a deep breath before continuing, "I am sorry for slapping you in rage. I wasn't in my senses. Seeing Lay like that really ignited my anger, and I took it out on you. I am truly sorry."He condensed his long-prepared apology into succinct words, each one genuine. But Rachel remained silent, her hands still on the door, which was slightly ajar.Come on, Rachel, just say you forgive me... or at least look at me."It's okay if you can't accept my apology," Sehun added, a tinge of disappointment evident in his voice.Rachel turned to face him, her eyes wide with surprise. "No, I mean... um... it's okay... umm..."Why am I stumbling over my words like this? She took a deep breath before continuing, "I can understand. Even I was scared seeing Lay like that. For the first time in years, I saw Amber crying rivers of tears."She chose to avoid looking into his eyes as she recalled the events of that dreadful day when Lay was shot while saving Sehun, and ultimately her. She bit her lower lip unknowingly as she glanced at him.For heaven's sake, stop biting your lip. It's tempting. Sehun shook his head, trying to dismiss the sudden rush of thoughts."Even I am sorry for those words. I didn't mean to mock your sincerity or anyone else's. It just slipped out, just like that," she admitted, her voice softer than usual. She poured her heart out to the man she currently despised the most, and Sehun couldn't help but feel a twinge of guilt. This was the second time he had seen her vulnerable today, something he wasn't accustomed to. He nodded, trying his best to maintain his usual cold demeanor, avoiding looking at her. He waited for her to get out of the car so he could steady his erratic heartbeat. She turned to leave but stopped once again.
"Umm... Sehun, thanks for today," she said softly.
His brain told him not to look at her, but he couldn't resist. Damn my brain.
He made eye contact, witnessing her genuine smile, which sent a tingling sensation through his body. "It's okay. We're even now," he replied, his lips unconsciously curving upward.
She was momentarily mesmerized by his smile.
Gosh, am I dreaming, or did he just smile?
"You're smiling," she pointed out, and his smile vanished instantly.Clearing his throat, he said, "Let's just pretend it never happened and forget about it." With that, he quickly drove off, leaving Rachel rooted to her spot, piecing everything together. She sighed, softly punching her chest.
"Stop it already, you moron. I could have a heart attack."
As she walked to her room, she couldn't shake the thought of how Sehun knew about her mother's birthday. No one knew about it except her father and herself. For the first time, she found herself admiring the beauty of Blue House, her so-called home. The mix of Korean culture and modernization was too beautiful to ignore. Images of Sehun smiling at her and even hugging her kept flooding her mind.
