It's a humid /rainy august and I'm here passing out volunteer shirts and granola bars at a 5k Annual Marathon. The humid weather, is attacking my hair, making my locks frizz up—making me look like a cat that just got shocked by electricity.
"Nyla, I kinda need you to run and get another box of medium orange volunteer shirts," Ms.Lewis, the head event manager, ask as she signs some students up and calling for a drivers van to escort them to their stations.
I don't necessarily run because my leggings stick to my skin causing friction and it's just all bad.
"Yeah sure," I call and casually walk to the tent near to grab a box of the volunteer shirts from underneath the table.
I return and hand her the box and she thanks me and begins to distribute them out to the younger volunteers.
"Uh, can you point me in the direction of the race?" Someone questions and I stare down at my phone. The race began like 15 minutes ago, they're too late. I turn around and spot Cameron with his usual huge cheeky smile. His light caramel skin and freckled face and wavy low cut.
Sometimes I marvel at it but remember Deck, it always comes back to Deck, sadly—I'm joking.
"Well the 9AM race already began, the 12PM race starts at well, 12PM," I explain and he chuckles and nods.
"I kinda figured that, hey mom," he calls out over my shoulder and waves and I turn to stare and see who he's waving at and it's Ms.Lewis. I turn to him stunned.
"Ms.Lewis is your mom!?" I question confusedly and stunned and slap my forehead. I knew she looked familiar!
"I thought I introduced you two when we were dating," he stares confusingly.
"Yeah you did, I just forgot, I don't know how I just forgot," I sigh out. How do you forget your ex-boyfriends mother?
"It's okay, it was 3 years ago. I think she doesn't remember you either," he chuckles but then stares at me like he said something offensive.
"I-I mean it was so," he tries to explain but I laugh at his defensive state.
"It's okay Cameron, I get it," I chuckle and stare over at his mom who talks quickly onto her phone.
"So you're back, when did you return?" I question because he went to SFU a bit early due to him meeting with his team and coach and just getting to know the campus, something I should've done.
"Flew in last night. My mom was stoked and she asked did I want to help and I agreed," he mentions.
"Look at Mr.Cameron Davis, college ready ," I cheer and he shrugs and strikes a "baller" pose.
"Okay-okay, I understand that we need cones there, but I did; however block off that entrance myself, someone must've removed them!" Ms.Lewis explains furiously as she waits for the other person to speak.
"Okay fine! I'll deal with it," she groans out and hangs up.
"Cameron, I'll need you to stay here and help Nyla with the volunteer sign up table. Some idiot decided to remove the blockage cones from the entrance now people are driving threw that lane cutting off runners," she explains and he nods.
