NOAH AND I are serving our last day of in-school suspension. It's now a Monday. Everybody hates Mondays. Including me.
I'm in a heated political discussion with Caleb currently.
"I hope Jacinda wins," I sigh.
"No. Winne the pooh better partner with Bill. I like the way the country is right now, I don't think it should change. Plus, National benefits us more."
"No Caleb, think of all the people that don't attend private school. Free university for a year! I think they deserve that," I argue.
"I want Labour to win. I like the Greens," Em speaks up, cutting into our conversation. I nod my head in agreement while Caleb just shakes his head.
"Can you guys shut up about politics, please? I have a hangover and this is not helping," Arlo whines from the corner that he's sitting in, emphasising the 'not.'
"Drinking again last night Arlo?" I snicker. "This surely isn't good for your brain development. But it explains those few vital brain cells I know you're missing," I smirk at him.
He takes a second to process what I said, before realising and yelling, "Hey! That wasn't nice, take it back!"
"Love you, Arlo," I smile back, blowing him a kiss.
He blows me one back and I laugh.
I look over to Noah and see him standing there tensely. He seems annoyed about something, from the way his jaw is clenched. Probably politics. I bet he's going for National.
He looks so funny standing there angrily, with little baby Nola in his arms. He's still bruised around his nose, but the swelling's disappeared by now.
"Oops," Arlo remarks casually, checking his phone.
I look over to him, "What?"
"Class started ten minutes ago."
Seriously? Oops?
"I guess we should get going then," Em says, breezily walking out with a wave of her hand.
Everyone else follows reluctantly, heading to the door. I hold it open for everyone while I wait for Noah. It gets awkward walking back, one behind the other, so we mutually, silently decided that we may as well walk together.
"What's got your panties in a twist?" I ask at his stoic face, as we begin to walk down the slowly empty corridor away from the others, until it's just us. And Nola.into
"Nothing."
"Surrrrreeeee," I mock him from yesterday. The corners of his mouth twitch ever so slightly.
We round the corner, before coming to a halt. Sara is standing there, fiddling with a locker combination, the very last one at the end of the hall. That's definitely not her locker, in fact, it's Noah's.
We told her she could come and sit with us in renspo, only on Monday's and Tuesday's though, but I guess she was a bit scared to come today.
I look at Noah sideways and see him staring at Sara, trying to figure out what she's doing.
She gets into the locker and begins rifling through the contents, obviously looking for something.
Enough is enough, we make eye contact and nod. He puts Nola down on the ground against the lockers, gives her a pat on the head, then we begin to walk down the corridor. I stop right next to her.
"Hey Sara. Whatcha doing?"
She slams the locker shut immediately.
"Oh hi Lola. I'm not doing anything, but I've got to get to clas-" she tells me, turning around, but Noah is standing there, blocking her way. She makes an abrupt stop, just managing not to slam into his chest.
"Why were you going through my locker?"
"I wasn't," she replies quickly. She obviously hasn't thought through what she is saying, as only seconds before we saw her, going through his locker.
"Yes you were, we just saw you," I speak up, raising one perfect eyebrow.
"Uhh.. I.. uhh.. I have a crush on Noah?"
He scoffs. "How flattering, now tell us the real reason."
"It's the truth! I've had a major crush on you, have had since we were twelve. Ever since you stood up for me one time in the cafeteria."
She has a crush on Noah? My stomach tightens and I grit my teeth. She can't have a crush on Noah. She doesn't even know him.
I tune out of my thoughts and back into their conversation, "Bullshit. I never sit in the cafeteria. I'm still waiting for a real answer."
"Oh. Umm."
So she doesn't have a crush on Noah? This is so confusing.
"Listen up. You either tell us the reason or Arlo will come to your house one night and personally remove the tattoo," my eyes are narrowed, once again, and I'm still standing there tensely.
I move closer to her and whisper, "He doesn't know how to remove tattoos the proper way. So I guess he'll have to find another."
Her eyes widen in horror as she processes what I've just told her, "Fine! Noah met with my dad's friend. I want to know why."
I send a questioning glare over to Noah, "Why are you meeting with her dad's friend?"
He shoots me a look that says, 'shut up Lola.' "Tell you later."
"But I won't be telling you," he turns his gaze to Sara. "You can look through my locker all you want, but you aren't going to find a single thing in there. You think I'm stupid enough to bring that stuff to school? Think again."
He grabs my arm and pulls me back down the same corridor that we came from. We stop at the end and he gently picks up Nola, before storming down the other way again.
As we pass Sara, I give her a dirty look, "Don't bother coming to our room tomorrow, bitch," I snarl as we stomp down to our suspension room.
Rude? Maybe. I don't care. My view on her has taken a complete 180 degree turn since Saturday. She can't just go through our lockers if she's looking for something. And she had the nerve to say she liked Noah to try and cover up for her sneaking around.
Okay, maybe that's bothering me more. What if it's true?
My thoughts are cut off when we enter the class and find Ms. Pinton sitting there, giving us an unimpressed look. So she's the unlucky one assigned to sit here with us for the rest of the day.
"And where have you two been?" She questions.
"Barbs! What's happening?" Noah asks, cradling little Nola to his chest.
"Please stop calling me that Mr. Richmond."
"Why? You can call me Noah," he winks.
She looks disgusted.
"Just sit down, both of you. And be quiet."
