The memories I lost

It has been a week since Reiner last came to see you. It was a rainy stormy day that you spend sitting on the bench next to the window and kept staring out with empty eyes. You wondered where he was and what he was doing right now; you really wanted to see him. As if someone could heard your thoughts the door opened and your head turned in the direction full of excitement, but you were disappointed the second you laid eyes on someone else.

"Get up, we are leaving" you were ordered by a soldier who was here to escort you

"To where?" you asked confused since you thought you were not allowed to leave this room

"Things will be explained to you there" he grabbed your arm and pulled you up

"Where is Reiner?" you asked as he pulled you out of the door

"You will see him soon" with a strange feeling in your stomach you followed the soldier to whatever destination he would lead you.

The steel doors to a large room opened before you and both of you walked inside. This was the judiciary building; you wondered what you were doing here. The room was filled with people as you made your way forward, you noticed a man sitting in the judge seat and you quickly realized what this was all about. You were brought to the podium as the soldier took his leave, your eyes looked at the people in front of you and you quickly found a familiar face, someone you did not expect to be here

"Reiner..." you uttered to yourself as you laid eyes on him, he looked away the second you made eye contact, he looked really guilty for some reason and you wondered what was going on.

"Miss (first & last name) is your name, am I right?" the judge asked looking at you lazily

"Yes, sir" you replied politely

"You come from Paradis Island is that correct too?" you nodded your head

"Yes, sir" he pushed is glasses in place and corrected his sitting posture as his eyes sharpened

"Then there is only one question left for me to ask" you swallowed nervously

"What happened on the day the ship towards Paradis Island sunk in the storm?" your eyes widened in confusion

"W-What?" you asked stuttering, the eyes of the people in front of you pierced you literally

"I asked what happened that day when the ship that carried you on board sunk. How did you manage to reach Paradis Island without a ship? And how did you enter the titans territory unseen by other soldiers that guarded the island during that time?" you noticed how your heartbeat increased and breathing became heavier, you grabbed your shirt and tried to calm down.

"I am really sorry sir, but I have no idea what you are talking about" the eyes of the judge turned angry and he signaled one of the soldiers that stood in the room to walk over to you and hand you a file.

"Then I am pretty sure that this might trigger your memory" you looked at the file that was placed in front of you and your eyes widened in shock

"Your name is (first & last name), you were born (birthdate) and resided here until the day you were sent on a mission with 5 other participants to investigate Paradis Island. On the day of your departure the ship you and the other 5 were on was caught in a terrible storm near Paradis Island. The ship sunk without any survivors, that is what the report said, but now one of the 6 who had declared death is right before our eyes. Tell me, how were you able to survive the storm? And how did you manage to get past the soldiers on the coast?" your eyes were shaking and so did your hands as they hold on to the report files

"September 6th year xxx, the leftovers from the battleship 97 were found washed up on the shore of Paradis Island 3 days after the departure from Marley. The area was searched widely but no survivors were found. The ship wreck was brought back to Marley for investigation. Deceased members of name: 6, others: 19"

A tear started to fall down from your eye and spread on the paper, how could you forget... how could you forget such an important thing.... You began to recall fragments of your memory that showed you the scene you just read. How come you never recalled it before?

"I see you remember now, you must have suffered from amnesia that lead to your memory loss" your eyes could not leave the paper, you clung on to it and continued reading through the files that let you recall more.

"How... could I forget..." you mumbled sadly

"Are you able to tell what happened exactly?" the judge asked resting his hands on the table, Reiner was still avoiding to look at you. His hands dig into his jacked as he heard you agreeing.

"I remember... that a storm was coming up, first we thought it was only a normal storm and did not bother so much about it, but soon it turned out to be heavier than we expected and we got caught in a blizzard that was giving the captain and everyone on board a hard time. The 6 of us were ordered to stay in the cabins but I refused, saying that I wanted to help. I sneak out without permission and helped the other crew members to get control of the ship, but the waves were to high, in a short amount of time we were all struggling to hold on to the ropes praying that we would make it out alive. I had swallowed so much water that I was completely out of energy, the rope I was clinging on too was soaked in sea water and would not last much longer. The crew had given up hope that we would make it alive to Paradis Island, and so did I. Only a few moments later a large wave hit the ship and I was washed away with the others, the ship broke into pieces due to the impact of the wave. I was so weakened that I could not swim and was sinking, Peter, one of the crew members grabbed on to my hand and pulled me back to the surface. He pushed me on a broken off board from the ship wrack to help me stay over water, the next wave was moving towards us, I remember how he smiled at me and told me that I should not worry, I would not die here, I was still young and my time was not up yet. I cried to his kind words but he grabbed my face and told me to fight, fight for myself to survive. I had to promise him that I would and then he let go off me, he pushed the board away from him as best as possible with his remaining strength as the wave hit us. My board was carried away on the wave as I left the others behind. When I woke up, I was washed up on a shore unable to move for a while. It was so peaceful and silent there, at that time I had already forgotten what had happened, I must have hit my head pretty hard since I was bleeding on my forehead. I remember wandering around for a while until I fell down from somewhere high, the impact knocked me out for several hours again and I woke up during night time. I was entangled in a tree that had stopped my fall; the moon was shining lightly as I climbed down and started making my way through the forest. Some time during the next day I had wandered pretty far into the land when I heard loud horse sounds approaching my location. The survey crops picked me up and brought me into the walls, they questioned me how I was able to get so far out without a horse but I could not remember myself. They left me in the hands of an orphanage inside wall Sina were I spend a few days but my condition worsened and my memory was fading more, I could not even remember the day before what I was wearing / doing or eating. I ended up living in the streets, stealing from others to survive. The military police caught me several times but the last time they decided to punish me and removed me from the city where only those of wealth and royalty resided. I ended up in the slums of the underground district where I lived for several years. My amnesia had fully affected me and I was unable to remember anything from my past and how I got here all I knew was my name, the citizens had pity with me and decided to make up a story that would make me feel better and so... I started to interact with those stories they told me and took them as my memories."

Everyone was quiet; you heard whispers everywhere around you and sunk your head. Reiner was shaking, he was nervous. The judge finally broke the silence and looked at you

"I am glad you regained your memories, young warrior. Thanks to the effort of Reiner Braun we could finally retrieve you from that nightmare" your eyes widened and you looked at Reiner

"Tell us, Reiner Braun, how were you able to find her?"
