My heart was beating very rapidly as I drove to the hospital. I had just gotten a call from my father saying my sister was injured and got admitted into hospital just minutes ago. I went towards the receptionist and asked what floor she was on.
He quickly checked his computer screen and told me, "Its floor 12, room 5, miss. You will have to wait here awhile though."
"Thanks," I said, running to the stairs. My mind was so preoccupied that I didn't even think to take the elevator. As I rushed up the stairs my thoughts went back and forth like a table tennis match. What happened to her? How did she get injured? Is it fatal that she might not be able to move?
Once I got there, I saw my parents sitting by her bedside. She looked awful. Her face was bruised around the cheeks and her bottom lip was cut. Her left foot was bandaged in a cast.
"Oh god. What happened?" I asked.
My mother got up from her seat to give me a comforting hug. "Thank goodness you're here, (y/n). Ramone was...found in a car accident. A drunk driver..." My mother couldn't finish her sentence and began tearing up. I let her sit back down next to my sister. I didn't know what to say. Everything came as a shock and I just couldn't think on what to do except wait for her to recover.Soon, a doctor came into the room. He was holding a clipboard in his hands. For a doctor, he looks rather handsome. Wait, why am I thinking this?! We looked to him expectantly for any good news.
Unfortunately he said the contrary, "I'm sorry, she's dying."
My mother began sobbing and my father stood up and faced the doctor. "You can't be serious. It was only a car accident. How can she be dying?!" He almost raised his tone. The doctor looked down, sullen. He turned to us and chuckled.
"What's so funny?!" The doctor gave out a soft laugh and finally said, "I was just joking. Your daughter is going to be fine."
That gave us a huge relief. He said the bad news in such a deadpan voice that, for a moment, I thought he was serious. Now I felt like an idiot and wanted to punch the doctor in his cute face.
"Ramone has sustained quite a bit of damage to her ribs and legs. But, she will be fine in about a months time. Only then we can give her therapy for her broken leg." He showed us the medical fees. The fees would have given my parents a heart attack but at least we had insurance that might cover the costs.
"I'll...leave you to discuss about this matter privately." He turned and walked out of the room. I left the room behind and walked after him. "Hey, Doctor..."
He turned around as I tapped his shoulder. "Ah, its you. Please, call me Dr. Iplier."
"What the heck dude? Why'd you try to scare my parents like that?" I demanded.
He sighed and said, "I'm really sorry about that. I didn't mean to offend you or your family. Sometimes I just...get carried away with my jokes."
A nurse then came up to us. "Dr. Iplier, a patient is waiting for you at room 28."
"Now if you'll excuse me, I have matters to attend to." He followed the nurse down the hallway and out of sight.
I went back to the room and found that my sister had awoken. "How are you feeling sweetie? Need anything?" my mother asked her.
"Almost everything feels numb. Could you help me move to the side? I feel stiff." We slowly helped her move to a comfortable position. She winced in pain as we moved her. "You're gonna be okay," my mother gave her most comforting voice.
"Thanks, mom," she smiled softly.
After the incident, I visited the hospital several times to check in on my sister. She recovered faster than expected, which was a miracle. But I couldn't help but be reminded of the doctor.
He had rather charming qualities and a mysterious side to him. I only saw him a couple of times while walking down the hallway, but he seemed really busy that I didn't stop him to chat. His mannerisms really intrigued me, so I decided that today might be a lucky day to ask him out. I waited at the hallway that I usually see him at. As predicted, he came rushing down the corridor with a nurse trailing behind him.
I raised my voice so he could hear. "Hey, Dr. Iplier?"
"Miss (y/l/n), what are you doing here?"
"Well I wanted to ask you if you were free to go...out? I just want to thank you for helping my sister."
"Sir we have to-"
"Shut up nurse!" he said. "Sorry, I will catch up with you in a bit."After the nurse walked away, he turned to me.
"Yes, I would love to do so. I'll...call you?"
"I think its better if I ask for yours...since you're so busy with surgeries and all." I gave him my phone and he typed in his number.
"What about the coffee shop down the road? I heard they have great cakes," I suggested.
"Nah, I've been there several times already and I feel a change of scenery is better. Text me your address and I'll come by to pick you." He winked at me. "Now I have to go. Around noon tomorrow?"
"Yeah, sure," I smiled at him. He gave me a thumbs up and went off to his duties.
