I love when characters describe events but the way they describe them is just ever so slightly wrong. Not like they're lying-but the way they tell the story shows their biases and values and blind spots.
It's often characterization through omission. The things they leave out can be just as telling as the things they include, and it's a great way to convey subtle details about their personality and priorities that are otherwise difficult to get across.
Of course like anything else you gotta take care not to go overboard-this device in particular is easy to miss the mark with because you don't want to ever get repetitive-but gosh when you pull it off well it's a wonderful thing
