I wasn’t really surprised seeing how classy and fancy looking the inside of the mother building was. After all, the outside already gave quite an impression.
Tyler led me all the way to the elevator and I was surprised that he pushed the basement button.
“Why are we going to the basement?” I asked, confused.
“Because my office is right down the basement.” Tyler responded as if it was the most obvious thing in the world. I thought he was only joking but when the elevator opened and I caught the first sight of the ‘basement’, my jaw almost drop. The basement, and I meant the whole basement, was set up to be the school director office.
The front desk was occupied by a tall young woman in uniform that seemed to be Tyler’s secretary. From the way she smiled at Tyler on the first sight of him approaching told me she’s got a thing for my brother. She didn’t even seem to notice me behind him. She’s got all her attention focused on her boss.
“Good Morning Tyler.” She greeted him cheerfully. I raised an eyebrow. Tyler? She just called her boss by his first name. But Tyler didn’t seem to bother about it and just greeted her back. I immediately wonder if there was something going on between the two of them. If there was, this could be fun. It’s been 2 years since he last dated anyone. Tyler never really took women seriously. Not like he’s a player or something but he was so into his work that all of his previous girlfriends never last a year. I couldn’t blame them. Tyler could already marry his work. He’s the most workaholic man I knew, second to my father.
“By the way, Hannah, this is Raven McQuillen, my sister.” Tyler revealed me from behind and gestured me to come over. I took a few steps closer and smiled at the lady who seemed to notice me for the first time.
“Hi, Raven, I’m Hannah Valdez, Tyler’s secretary.” she said offering a handshake.
“Nice to meet you.” I took her hand willingly and gave my most convincing ‘good girl’ smile.
“I’m gonna give Raven a little orientation first.” Tyler said as he walked towards a door I figured must be his main office. “Give me a call if Clyde shows up.”
I nodded my goodbye to Hannah and followed Tyler in his main office.
“Wow.” Was the first word that escaped my mouth as I looked around his ‘main office’ which didn’t look like an office at all. Except for the desk and the chairs across from it, also the long table occupied with seats at one corner of the room (it seemed like a table used for board meetings), the whole room looked like a recreational den. There were couches and coffee tables, a big flat screen TV, a refrigerator at the other corner of the room and guess what. A bed! There was a bed right behind a glass wall at the far end of the room.
“Well? Did your eyes have enough of my room?”
I turned to Tyler who was raising his eyebrows at me. He was already on his seat at his desk.
“You’re the weirdest school director I have known so far. Why don’t you just live here and let me live on my own at our house?” I said, taking a seat across his desk.
He shrugged and grinned, “You don’t just call anyone or anything weird if they’re just different from the typical. It’s just that I have originality.”
“No. You’re just a freak. That’s it. “ I teased. “Just give me my schedule and I’m out of here. Who knows you might be contagious.”
He made a face which I actually find cute and then he started fiddling inside his desk drawer. After a few minutes, he handed out a piece of paper to me. I took it and read it for awhile.
“So, I have classes until 3,” I muttered. “And.. I’ll be in the Special Class? What’s that?”
“Just as it says, it’s a special class. The Special class is for special students.”
I raised an eyebrow at him, “Is that ‘special class ‘special in a positive or negative way?”
Negative isn’t it? I thought, reading Tyler’s darkened expression.
“Well,” Tyler cleared his throat. “It’s really up to you when it comes to judging your class. Everyone has different opinions regarding the Special Class.”
I rolled my eyes. I could see where this was going. “Then, in your opinion, what’s it like?”
“Um…well” Tyler shrugged. “That class isn’t a teacher’s favorite but if you ask me,” He hesitated for a second then gestured me to lean closer on his desk. I did and then he continued, almost whispering now, “That class is very unique.”
My shoulders sagged then I slumped back to my seat. “Very positive.”
“Well, it’s my opinion. And I’m quite sure that I’m the only one in the school who thinks that way about that class.”
“Sure,” I said, standing up from my seat. “Guess I should just find out myself. See you around, then.”
“Wait,” Tyler hand out a booklet from his drawer. “Might as well read the rules and regulations of the school as you tour around. There’s a map inside, just in case you need one. The school’s pretty big. Goodluck then, Ms. McQuillen.”
“Thanks for your orientation.” I responded sarcastically then head for the door.
I found Hannah just in time as she was about to pick up a phone call. She wished me good luck before picking up but Tyler ruined my mood already so I didn’t bother smiling in return. Then I headed for the elevator. Waiting for the elevator to come down, I could still hear what Hannah was saying on the phone.
“Clyde? --Right. --Yes, I’ll tell him right away.” Hannah was saying in a somewhat nervous tone.
Clyde, Tyler’s visitor. Who could it be? Why was Hannah sound so alarmed talking about him?
Just in time, the elevator opened and revealed a young man in a student uniform. He stood tall with a messy jet black hair, stunning dark brown eyes and a bleeding lip. A bleeding lip!
It wasn’t really a big deal. He’s not even someone I know. Besides, I was not in the mood to care about a stranger with a bleeding lip so I just went in the elevator accidentally bumping shoulders with the boy as he was making an exit. He seemed to take it seriously because he turned to scowl at me and blocked the elevator door from closing. I was thrilled by his reaction so I thought of making it a little fun. I gave him a sly smirk to tease him just a bit, making it look like I bumped to him on purpose. Maybe I was really looking for trouble.
But I didn’t thought he would outsmart me.
“Hey!” I started to argue but his fingers were quick and were already on the elevator buttons landing on different numbers and pushing them all at the same time.
“Enjoy the ride.” Were his last words before the elevator closed, a devilish smirk on his face.
It was a pretty cool elevator, actually. I requested it to be slightly different from the other elevators in the building. It will bring you to different floors based on which button you pushed first. Say, there are two of you inside. You want to be on the ground floor but the other one wants to be on the 14th and he pushed the 14th floor first before the ground floor then you two will take a ride all the to the 14th floor first. It’s really fun!
Tyler’s cheerful voice as he told me about this particular elevator rang in my ears repeatedly as I made my way up to the top floor of the building.
