Harry’s P.O.V

I took a deep breath of fresh air as I stood out on porch. It was four in the morning, and I couldn’t bloody sleep for the life of me.

Last night, Lou and I had had a little chat, and honestly I don’t think it went all that bad. But as it turns out, saying what was on my mind didn’t get it off my mind —it simply made it known what was on my mind.

The moment Louis wrapped his strong arms around me and dozed off, I knew there was no getting to sleep. The sheer feeling of his muscles tensing and relaxing as his sockless feet wrapped up in the sheets was enough to keep me up without my mind on red alert.

But no, my mind was running at a constant pace. All day I had managed to push through and muddle up the confusion, enough so that coherent thoughts weren’t even so much as a notion to bother dealing with. No, but the second my head hits the pillow, and Lou’s arms are around me, my mind defogs. It’s ridiculous really. Suring my waking hours I can hardly sum up an intelligent response, but the moment I’m ready to sleep, it’s like I begin contemplating the moment of life. I’ve always done my deepest and best thinking at the worst times… in bed, in the shower, in the middle of a lecture in class.

So having not slept a wink I just laid there. I laid there from the moment I’d slapped Louis in the face, to the moment I heard the faintest whistle of a bird at four. By four, my eyes were no longer retching, I’d long past that. Last night, I’d found out the painful way that exhaustion comes in different stages.

First you’re riddle by a few odd yawns and a bit of drowsiness, nothing too different from when you wake up really. Next you start to blink and your eyes get dry, and your throat gets dry and the yawns won’t come out anymore. Then your eyes start to hurt —I mean, really hurt —almost as if a migraine is building up right behind your eyes and pounding and throbbing. After the pain goes away, it gets easier; you sort of just feel empty, and nothing is really making any sense, and you’ve got no immediate problems at all. By this time on, you’re too exhausted to notice you’re even tired anymore.

By the time I’d passed stage five exhaustion I’d decided that there was no point to me laying there in bed and taking up space any longer, so I figured I’d just leave Louis to his beauty sleep —not that he needed it. However, I found myself so comfortable in his arms and so warm and content, that it took me nearly five minutes just to make a move to leave. It took another five to unravel his arms from my middle carefully, and another five after that to gather some decent clothes in the dark.
