After some walking, I reached the library. If you could call it that. The place was so small it could be compared to a hut. As I walked inside, I found myself in shock, as the inside was bigger than the inside of the guild. And almost every inch of that large space was stocked with books of different colors and sizes. Either sitting patiently on shelves, or clutched in the hands of various people.

“How is this even possible?” I mumbled.

A voice behind me spoke. “That, my good lad, is because of the magic that protects this building. Just like the whole city.”

I spun to find the speaker: a man with ash brown hair and pale white skin.
“Please, leave your weapon here,” he said. “Fighting inside the library is strictly prohibited.”

He looked strong enough to take me on in a fight, so I released my sheathed blade and placed it in his outstretched hand.

“Oh,” he said, examining the sword as if it was a diamond. “This is a one-handed broad sword.” He looked up at me, slightly nervous. “Did…” he stuttered. “Did you steal this?”

“No. I just took it from this dead soldier.” I shrugged. “He was trying to kill me.”

That just seemed to make him more nervous. “You killed a demon soldier and then stole his sword?”

“They tried to kill me first. I had to defend myself.” I tilted my head. “How did you know of those soldiers?”

“They are the only type of people to wield weapons such as these,” he said. He turned to a door behind four bookshelves. “Follow me. Quickly now.”

I stayed where I was. I didn’t know this guy, and he took my sword. Why should I follow him?

I got my response with a bellow from outside. “Where is he? Find him! He must not get away!”

“Quickly,” the man insisted. “They’re nearly here.”

“Who?”

“Demons! Let’s go!”

My heart started to quicken its pace. I’d already killed four of them. Chances were good that they weren’t about to give me a medal for it.
I raced after the man as we raced into the doorway and into a dark tunnel. In a manner of seconds, light shined at the far end.

“There’s the end,” he said. “Hurry up!”
I shot him a glare behind his back. I was the one the demons wanted, yet this guy was acting like he was the one in trouble. Well, he was still helping me avoid a confrontation, so I couldn’t be too mad with him.
We ran out onto green grass and fields all around.

“We’re finally out of the city,” he said.
I glanced back at the tunnel we had come from. “So that was an escape route?” I asked in surprise.

“Seal!” he shouted. A wall appeared and blocked the tunnel. He turned back to me with a smile. “Yes.” He took a moment to breathe. “That was too close. We almost got caught.”
“I still don’t know what the hell is going on,” I said, irritation present in my voice. “I don’t know what I’m doing here. I don’t know what this affinity for magic stuff is supposed to…”

“Here,” he interrupted, tossing a grey orb to me.

I stared at the smooth, pearly surface. “What’s this for?” I asked.

“Memory orb,” he explained. “It contains all the basic stuff you need to know about magic and this world. Just place it against your forehead, and it will tell you everything.”
With nothing else to lose, I did as he said. Instantly, there was a flare of pain from my head. It felt like a blade drilling into my head. I yanked the orb away.
