A New World ?

Wake up. Wake up!

I gasped for air and opened my eyes. The environment around me had changed. Tall trees with vines hanging down and patches of grass everywhere first I was just outside my room and now am here, I heard the rustling of leaves. I was in a forest. But how did I get here? And what were those gates about?

“Over here. That’s where the light came from,” a voice shouted.

Josh sighed in relief. Finally, someone to explain what the hell is going on.

WHOOSH!

His heart slams against his chest. An arrow had flown right past Josh face and hit a tree. These people were far from friendly. I reached for my gun. The holster was empty.

“Where’s my gun?” I demand out loud.

“He’s over there,” the voice yelled.

“Remember; kill on sight!”

“Oh fuck,” I muttered. “Just my luck.” I looked around once more. As I scanned the vines again, the lightbulb of ideas shone above my head. An ambush, I thought proudly as I grabbed for the vines. Hauling myself up, I switched to the branches, slowly crawling across the trees in the direction of the voices.

Footsteps. Closing in fast. I counted about four pairs of feet running in my direction.

“Where did it go?” one of them yelled.
I’m an it now? I thought angrily. They appeared below me. Four soldiers. As they begin to run under my tree, I jumped out and fell right on top of the leading soldier.

His neck gave a satisfying snap as I landed on him. However, my legs screamed in pain from the impact, and I rolled to the ground.

As the nerves in my legs flared in pain, I looked up at the remaining three. With my legs hurt, they seemed almost like monsters to me.

“Kill it!” one of the soldiers yelled.
As they closed in, I yanked the sword the dead soldier beneath me was carrying and spun it in a wild slash.
Blood spurted from the cut I carved into the nearest soldier’s chest. He hit the ground with a thud.

The third soldier backed up, a bow and arrow in his hands. He pulled the bowstring back, ready to fire, but I was faster. Racing up to him, I dodged his buddy’s slash and jumped for him, my new sword shining in the fading sunlight.

With two slashes, I rid his body of his arms and then followed up with a stab through the chest. His buddy was still closing in on me, so I yanked the sword from his chest and turned to face my final opponent.

Our blades sang as they locked together, and we found ourselves face to face. I blocked out the scent of blood and sweat on him, focusing on his cleft chin as he spoke.

“You’re rather skilled to take out three of my men,” he said, malicious hatred lining his tone. “Tell me: what is your name.”

I grinned. “Thank you, but you won’t need my name where you’re going,” I reply.

He chuckles. “You little shit,” he muttered.

He shoved me backward forcefully. I teetered on my heels, but pulled myself back and slashed at him. He jumped away from my slash and began to chant in a language I have never heard before.

A circle started to shine around him, with strange symbols around it’s spherical boundaries.

He held up his arms, and I backed up. What was going on?

A huge spear made of ice formed above him and shot straight at me. I barely dodged it, the temperature dropping to brutally freezing levels as it narrowly missed my arm. But it was not the end.

More spears formed above him, all of them hurling themselves at me. I ducked and dodged, but I was running out of places to run. Ice shattered against the ground, it’s shards scattering around like broken glass. I was backed up against a tree; I had nowhere to run now.

“Time to die!” the soldier yelled. He shot a final ice spear right at my chest.
As I held up my sword in a defensive stance, I felt my heartbeat begin to slow.

“Is this… where it ends for me?” I wondered.

Don’t give up hope just yet. I’ll give you some of my power.

The voice was masculine, and made my body vibrate as it spoke in my mind.
Suddenly, I felt my body surge with a rush of energy. The despair left my heart. I felt stronger. The man’s ice spear almost made me laugh. I puffed out my chest and let it hit me head on.

CRACK!

The soldier’s smug expression dropped faster than stones on a cliff as his spear shattered in front of me, falling to the ground in shards that glittered like jewels.

“That’s impossible,” he screamed. “You can’t conjure a field like that. You…” Realization dawned on his face. “You half demon!” He screamed.

“Half-demon?” I asked, more half amused. “Doesn’t matter. Now, it’s my turn.”

Dark, purple energy surrounded my hands and covered my sword. I lunged forward, the ground breaking under my feet. As his stared in pure fear and shock, I swung my sword. The purple blade cut through him like butter.

I exhaled, relief flooding through my veins. The fight was over. If it wasn’t for that voice, I would probably have died long ago. I scan my surroundings: shattered pieces of ice and dead bodies lay on the ground. I approach the body of the archer and look through its pockets. Three pieces of gold, a bow and arrow and a map. Light shone from the body of the final soldier. Looting his corpse revealed a glowing stone. I liked the glow the little rock gave off and slipped it into my own pocket. I stood up and checked my newfound map. It seemed that there was a village five miles east of here.

I smiled. Now I can finally get some answers.
