"Have you kept your homework in your bag?" asked my dad, as I wore my sneakers.
"Yes daddy, I'm not twelve anymore." I said with a smile.
"English?" He asked again with a lifted eyebrow.
"Yes." I said rolling my eyes.
"History?"
"Yes."
"Math?"
I looked at him, letting the question hang there. Then I gave him a small smile.
Dad shook his head and smirked. "What would you do without me?"
"What would I do without you." I repeated and kissed him on his forehead. Then I sprinted back to my room and came back with my math homework.
As I kept it in my bag, mum came out of the kitchen with a plate of fresh waffles. "It's seven thirty, Kitty. You'll get late. Just pick up a waffle and get going." she said.
"Mum, I just had breakfast. I'll have it after school." I protested.
"But you have an extra class with your history teacher after school." Mum said.
"But....."
"Oh, just gobble it up, Kitty." Mum hastily said, stuffing a waffle in my mouth. Immediately the sugary taste melted in my mouth.
I held the piece of waffle that was dangling out of my mouth and rolled my eyes at mum.
"Oh, and by the way. Grandpa is coming to live with us now." she told me.
My ears perked up as soon as I heard 'grandpa' and my eyes brightened. "You mean, he's coming to live with us forever?" I couldn't contain the excitement in my chest.
"Yes. He's old now, as you know, and can't take care of himself. So your father will go to pick him up later in the morning.
I looked at daddy. "That's amazing!!" I cried.
Grandpa and I were always very close. I used to meet him almost every month. But this past year, I wasn't able to meet him as I'd been really busy. But now he was going to come live with us? That was so cool! But that reminded me of how little time we had together. I mean, my grandpa was eighty now. But I shouldn't worry about that now. Grandpa'll hang in there alright. So, pushing the thought out of my head, I turned toward mum.
"Bye." I said, hugging her.
Then I turned around and bumped into my dad. He folded his arms and looked at me with a scowl.
"What?" I asked.
He didn't answer and continued to stare at me.
Then it hit me. "Ah, our special hand shake." I remembered and picked up Julie's sunglasses which were kept on a nearby table and wore them. Daddy had his own glasses hung on his shirt and wore them too.
After our sunglasses were on, we began our special hand shake. It contained many weird hand movements and sounds and lasted for one whole minute.
On reaching the end of our hand shake, daddy said, "Don't forget to SWAG around in school."
"Okay, enough SWAGing around, the two of you." Mum said rolling her eyes at which we both laughed.
I finally picked up my bag and turned to leave, when I heard Julie's voice. "Hey, Kitty!"
I turned around.
"Let me pick you up after your extra class today. I'll get a chance to see the school." She said.
