Chapter Four ~ Accidently On Purpose

Eva dipped her toes in the cold water, wriggling them about a little and giggled in sensation. She hadn't done this since her early teens. She closed her eyes, stretching her arm out to either side and took a deep breath in. She sighed. It felt good to be out; to get some air. She was fourteen the last time she had left her building.

"Why didn't I think of this?" Eva thought out loud, referring to the hooded cloak she wore.

"Because you're too busy killing people," Jett answered, startling her. She clutched her cloak over the area of her hard beating heart since she hadn't realised he was close by. He stood besides her, placing an arm around her shoulder and pulled her closer to him.

Darren had strolled away after receiving a call, which was apparently private since he whispered while he was around them before deciding to take the call elsewhere. It was a wonder Eva and Jett raised no suspicion over this after he was gone way too long, yet to return.

"You make it sound so horrible," Eva responded, leaning her head on his shoulder.

"That's because it is a horrible thing. Let's go sit on the sand somewhere." Although Eva nodded to his suggestion to find somewhere to sit, she was angered by his insensitivity.

As they turned away from the sea, walking arm in arm, the wind caused Eva's hair to flow behind her ears, causing goose bumps along her cheeks. She hissed from the sudden cold and Jett held her tighter.

"How about here?" Eva pointed, already turning back round, which cause Jett to release his grip from her, to face the sea and took a seat. Jett followed pursuit and put his arm around her shoulders again. They sat not too far from the sea, although far enough to avoid getting wet. It wasn't hard to find a spot; although the beach is completely busy and pact during the day, you'll only find the odd few people during the night. Not far from the two sat a woman playing a guitar and a small child intently digging up the sand.

"It's wrong, you know," Jett eventually voiced after a few moments of silence.

"What is?"

"What you keep doing. Killing people, I mean." It took a moment for him to reply because he contemplated whether to continue, aware of her short temper.

"It's not wrong if they deserve it." He was shocked by how calm she appeared.

Eva's heart beat with the rhythm of the soft melody behind them, coming from the guitar. Neither of the two noticed the three men wearing black suits standing some distance away. They were too far to hear the conversation yet close enough to perceive Jett and Eva.

"But did they deserve it?" Jett was more confident this time.

Two more men popped up, standing close to the child and woman with the guitar. One of those suited men even exchanged a few words with the woman. Both Eva and Jett were too absorbed to notice this. Usually, when Jett was outside he would look in every direction. He was paranoid that people would find a connection between him and Eva. The whole town wished to stop Eva in her evil ways. However, due to the circumstance and excitement of spending time with Eva outside he forgot to worry.

"Yes, they made mistakes," she replied, emotionless.

"No, Eva, everyone makes mistakes. No one deserves painful death over it." Jett attempted to make Eva understand. He sighed, and then spoke under his breath, although Eva managed to catch what he said: "Not like you get that."

"And my f..." She trailed off, a lump forming in her throat. Jett waited for her to finish even though he knew who she was going to mention. "My Father, did he not deserve it?"

Eva lowered her head, ashamed of revealing her emotions. She never got over the events of her past and usually avoided the subject but something was different about tonight. Eva concluded that being outside did this to her.

"Babe, don't cry!" Jett released Eva and cupped her face, turning her to face him. He used his thumb to wipe away the tears.

She turned away, forcing Jett to let go. "I'm not crying. It's the wind!" She replied harshly.

"Look, Eva, what your father did was wrong but it wasn't worth the painful death you caused him. Nothing is worth that." Jett put his arm around her again to grab her attention. "Do you understand?"

"But she said it was OK! I needed to be free, Jett. Don't you get that? He b -" Eva trailed off and the two turned around, distracted by the shouting behind them.

It was the woman and the child. The two saw the woman yanking the little boy's hand vigorously. The two men who stood beside them earlier were no longer there.

"Max, let's go!" The woman shouted, dragging the boy along.

"But Mum, five more minutes, please," the little boy begged.

The boy was making it very hard for his mother to pull him along (the guitar in her hand making it even harder) and after a few steps she halted. She bent down in front of her child and slapped him in the face.

"When I tell you we're leaving, it means we're leaving! It's already very late." She leaned in to slap him again and the boy began to cry.

Anger pulsated through Eva's veins and she jumped up, making her way towards the woman and the child. The rush she was in caused the hood of her cloak to fall down, revealing her face.

"How dare you hit a child? He's very young! Don't ever raise your hand on him ever again!" Without a second thought, the anger in her determining her actions, she took out the crest and pointed it towards the woman. Not a moment later she pressed on the button and the woman was engulfed with the coloured light.

"Mama!" The little boy cried as he watched his mother collapse to the ground in pain, screaming and clutching her stomach.

"Eva, run!" Came a shout from behind her as the woman lay motionless. She released the button. She watched the boy bend down and curl up against his mother, tears filling up his eyes. Eva glanced behind her to see two men in suits holding Jett back by his arms. She looked left and right to perceive more men running towards her.

She panicked and grabbed the boy before she ran towards her building. The boy put up a fight, kicking and shouting for his mother. She wasn't fast enough as a hand touched her shoulder. She immediately dropped the boy and pointed the crest over her shoulder and aimed it at the man touching her. He instantly let go, screaming before he hit the sand. He was dead. The other men chasing after her took a wise decision to slowed down after that. Eva was able to pick the boy up again and run.

She glanced behind her once she was close to her building and saw that no one was behind her and slipped through the side entrance into the building.
