Chapter 23

Agnes POV

Today was the day. The day when...

I got to go to the cinema with James!

Omigod!

I texted him, saying I couldn't wait (and added a smiley face). He responded with a "I'm sick, can't make it. Sorry." text. I fell to my knees.

What?

I'd waited for this moment for ages and now he's sick?

This can't be happening.

My phone chimed.

Ericka was texting.

She said she hoped the date went well.

I replied by (sadly) saying that he's sick and that he couldn't make it.

She answered asking if I wanted to go out for ice-cream in Hollygar Park.

Sometimes I wonder if she's a human or a saint.

I met her at the park in ten minutes. We both lived pretty close to it, so it wasn't a problem. I saw her sitting in the old swings, waiting for me to come. I smiled and ran over as silently as I could, scaring her when I said "Hi" right next to her ear in a creepy stalker's voice. She jumped so much she almost looked like a frightened kangaroo. I laughed.

The park was crowded, but surprisingly the line for ice-cream wasn't that long. We sat down in the dry grass, the wind flapping against my ginger hair. Ericka's hair remained still, since she'd put it up high in a "donut bun", as I like to call it. We just sat there, not saying anything. It felt good. Anyone else would have tried to cheer me up, but Ericka wasn't like that. She understood that I didn't wanna talk about it. When we did talk, it was about the upcoming exams we had, or how much we wanted the summer vacation to come. No James talk. I was quite happy, actually.

Eventually, we finished our ice-creams. We went for a walk around the pond, and laughed a lot. Ericka is really funny!

Ericka: Hey, did you hear?

Me: What?

Ericka: Apparently, Daphne was sick today with this super-contagious disease. It's nothing big, really, but I heard she's gonna have to stay at home for another week!

Me: Really?

Ericka: Yeah!

That's strange. So, James texts me saying he can't make it because he's sick, and then Daphne's sick, too?

No, Agnes, no. It's just a mere coincidence. Don't think about it. I thought.

After a while, Ericka had to go home again. I returned to mine, too, and grabbed a snack from the fridge before racing upstairs to my phone.

I opened iMessage to see that I had a new message from Tayra. She was asking me if I wanted to go shopping today.

I replied with a yes, telling her to meet me at H&M.
