Happy Halloween!

ADRIANNE

°°°°°

I was seated by the fountain located in the school grounds, a cigarette tucked in between my middle and index finger, smoke coming out as it burns out. My feet repeatedly tapped against the ground as I peered across the wide open entrance, waiting for specific faces to appear, failing miserably as I realized the last periods weren't over yet.

It was unusually sunny today, which was strange because all October it has been nothing but rain and occasional snow. It was a good day to walk around the park and have picnics and shit, but that wasn't really my thing anymore, neither was it the reason I ditched my classes today. Earlier this morning I woke up to the sound of Uncle Ron and his children arguing about the Halloween dance. He had stated that he was not going to let them go to the event which would be held tomorrow at our auditorium. Of course it was beyond horrible, for the siblings. They're been preparing for that dance for almost two months now ever since it was first announced. And that also meant bad news for me.

I was the only one allowed to go to it by Ron's permission. And that further added to Ericka and Ella's fury. I almost declined his offer. I'd rather be miserably reading a book inside my room than go to that and enjoy being high with my friends, knowing that later on I'd experience hell once I get home. Although I couldn't and against my will I've accepted. As long as I get to be away from the two.

It has been a week since I've told Uncle Ron and Aunt Marianne about Ericka's school issues, and for the past week, they did not seem to let it go. As expected they reacted severely furious about it and I ended up getting suspended for two days when they've told everyone I was fucking some popular athlete in our soccer team that everyone seemed to have a crush on, which of course wasn't true but my mouth was too full of words to deny the rumors. It was proven wrong by our Guidance Counselors when the Athlete denied it, but they were the only ones who believed it. My school mates weren't buying anything that included decency.

Placing the cigarette in between my mouth, I inhaled and squinted my eyes from the smoke, breathing out once I've cherished enough of it. Neither of Ella and Ericka's parents know I smoke. If they did they would've grounded me from the day I started which was two years ago when I met Jumper and Georgie. The reason behind was pretty pathetic. They all seemed to be doing it and I didn't want to be left it from the rest of the group, so instead of staying in my good shoes, I took a hit and it became a habit. I only get to smoke in school though, and Jumper's the one to keep everything I had of it. Uncle Ron doesn't come to my room, but I was safer that way.

All of a sudden my ears were nearly deafened by the sound of the school bell going off, indicating class dismissals. Not less than a minute, groups of students began going out, heading for the gates which was right next to the fountain, stupid me, I stayed there unmoving and gave them the chance to recognize the girl rumoured to have fucked Arthur Michigan. I wasn't really paying that much attention to them since, they all had the same expression when they realized I was sitting there. Cringes and Snickers. The others thankfully ignored me though, probably because they were freshmen and had no idea what the fuck was going on, but once they meet my cousins, it's not going to stay like that anymore.

I stood up and begin walking across the grounds for the main entrance, stopping halfway when a girl with Blonde Hair stepped out of the door, along with her three more girls carrying what seemed to be that week's book reports. They were chatting and giggling, the girl with dyed black hair wearing a leather jacket, taking a drag on the cigarette in between her lips that were coated with burgundy lipstick.

A sigh of relief then escaped my lips, the sight of their familiar faces bringing ease to my tensed senses. It stayed like that for a while as I waited for them to reach the gate when I've noticed they weren't the only ones that came out of the exit. So did Ella and Ericka. Eyes widening I dropped my cigarette and stomped on it repeatedly until the glow went out, kicking it to the side with my heart almost falling out of my chest. Fortunately the siblings were too busy on their way to notice me and I almost regret wasting what was left of that thing I threw away.
