Thunder boomed; lightning crackled, sending forks of light splintering across the dark sky. The storm was one of the biggest known in history, sheets of water came down in floods, hail flattened the ripe, golden wheat farmers would have been harvesting come August.
In the split second illumination of more lightning I could see where I was going. Not that I needed it, I could see in the dark almost as well as I could during the day. Besides the lightning only blinded me, taking away a few precious seconds as my eyes readjusted. The few precious seconds that I needed to escape.
My mind flashed to only an hour earlier.
The United SuperNatural Council, or USNC for short, had been holding their biyearly meeting. A meeting where the supreme leaders of all the 'supernatural' species got together and discussed stuff.
Like how to better control the world's only Amority. Which would be me.
Why was I running for my life?
Well, actually I wasn't running for my life, I was only humoring them. Amorities were near indestructible, almost immortal in fact. There's no possible way were they going to kill me. I could take all of them on and stay standing with barely a scratch. But that's off topic.
They were chasing me because I... umm... got mad and sorta slashed some of the leaders' arms off.
Well they were talking about me like I wasn't in the room with them! I think that's a good excuse, don't you? I mean at least I didn't kill every living creature in the whole room. Including the stupid fly buzzing around my ear. Actually, now that I think about it, I did kill the stupid bug.
I could almost hear my best friend's, annoying, whiney voice in my head.
Off to the anger management class again!
Yeah right, like I'd go to some stupid class. But she did have a point sometimes.
"Jacqueline! Come and face your punishment!" Specter Grim's voice boomed over the impending thunder.
Great goodness, I hate ghosts! They're so creepy! Always following you around, trying to scare the heeberjeebers out of you. And Grim was no exception.
"Yeah, like I'd come to you." I mumble under my breath. I continue running at a speed that even vampires and werewolves can barely match.
There has only been one vampire that could run faster than me. His name? Trent. Plus it didn't help that he really, really wanted my blood. I mean who wouldn't want to drink the fiercest predator alive's blood? Only Trent. Oh, and speaking of him...
Sliding on some mud I skidded to a halt. I quickly rolled underneath some dripping wet bushes, seconds to spare. Light steps, barely discernible, stopped, stylish boots inches away from my nose.
"Jace, Jace, Jace." A velvety voice sang in a sing-song voice. "I know you're here. Come out and fight like a good little girl. Or are you too scared?" He tapped his foot impatiently.
"I'm fifteen, idiot." I mutter as I eye his leather, steel-toed boots.
There's a rustle from the bushes and I feel my breath hitch in my throat. Illuminated, greenish-gold eyes stared at me. Trent.
"There you are! I was getting worried, that's no way to treat an old friend, now is it?" A smug grin flashed across his face, revealing sharp incisors stained red. He grabbed my arm, dragging me out from beneath the bush.
"Let go of me!" I snarl at him as he pulls me up to his face. I hung suspended from his grip by my arm, trying to keep myself from tearing out his throat and then burning him at the stake.
