we are born into this world thinking that one day we will have it all together. we are raised to think that adolescence is our most enjoyable and happy years. we are taught that as we welcome adulthood, we are to be prepared to do nothing but sacrifice, and be grateful amidst it all.

yet, people do not quite understand, that when we are children we listen to our parents -- the adults -- fall apart. we see the way dad talks to mom like everything is her fault as he pours himself another glass of jack and coke. we see mom trying to hold it together, smiling as artificially as possible, thinking she's convinced us everything is alright.

as we enter adolescence, our teenage years, we start falling apart too. endless nights studying our asses off hoping to at least make a B on that history test. trying to please our parents with good grades so they can act proud; when the only reason they're praising our efforts is because the more "A's" we have, the more scholarships, which means they won't have to put themselves more in debt trying to put us through college. then there's broken friendships and broken hearts. nights when we cry ourselves to sleep silently so we don't disturb mom and dad. then there's depression. depression so crippling we fear the pain will never cease. and to try to numb the dull ache in our chest we carve pictures into our wrists. adolescence is long sleeve t shirts and not eating and the constant fear of never being good enough.

you see, we are born into this world not knowing how bad it is. we are unaware of the struggles we will have to weakly attempt to overcome but fail miserably. I think if we knew ahead of time what we were born into, nobody would want to face it. but unfortunately we don't get to choose what cards we are dealt. so with that being said, we will continue to walk around in our long sleeve t shirts and disguise the alcohol on our breath with mints, pretending to have it all together when really no one has it all together at all.
