The soft patter of rain against the library's front windows echoed throughout the building. A few of Patrick's regular customers were littered around, taking shelter from the downpour outside.

Xlotl had spent the whole day running around with her bunny in her mouth, nuzzling against visitors' legs. Any time Patrick scolded her she would just huff and run deeper into the maze of books.

Eventually Patrick abandoned his copy of The Great Gatsby and left his position behind the counter.

There was something oddly comforting about roaming the isles. The scent of old books filled his senses. He let his finger drag over oak shelves, the feeling of hardwood under his sock-clad feet (yes, he spent a lot of his time not wearing shoes) reminding him of running through the library as a young child.

His grandparents had owned the library before they passed and Patrick inherited it. He tried his hardest to maintain the feeling it held when he was young. He was worried it had become too modern, like it's rustic charm had been swept away as it changed owners.

The ring of the bell pulled him from his thoughts and he returned to the front desk, whereupon he was greeted by an unfamiliar face. He wasn't used to new customers, but he greeted the taller man with a slight nod and a soft smile anyway.
