"What's your favourite storybook, kid?" Patrick asked offhandedly, sifting through the paperwork atop the front desk while trying not to disturb the tinsel that lined the desk.
The strawberry-blonde boy hummed softly, looking up from the colouring book he had on the table. He had spent all morning in the library, sheltered from the snow, colouring in his own corner and occasionally asking Patrick which colour he should use next.
"I like... Where The Wild Things Are!" Patrick nodded and smiled softly, looking up at the small boy quickly.
"That's a good one." He mumbled, humming jingle bells under his breath. His eyes wandered over the order sheet, checking off selections for new books to be ordered. "Have you read Narnia?"
Declan shook his head slowly and put his pencil down on one side of the table. He looked deep in thought before closing the book entirely and turning to face the small librarian.
"My big brother said mom used to read it to him when he was little."
"Did she not read to you?"
"N-no... she left after I was born and Saint was only one." Patrick looked up from the papers almost instantly. He caught sight of the tear tracks down Declan's cheeks and his heart wretched. He hurried to the boy's side and pulled him into a hug, ignoring the voice in his head that told him his actions were inappropriate.
"You're a tough little soldier, Dec, you're gonna be just fine."
