"I brought you lunch." Pete grinned, pushing the door shut with his foot. He placed two McDonalds bags on the counter and smiled up at the librarian. "Oh. Hey, Ryan." His smiled dropped and his brows furrowed.
"Hey." The brunette snickered, not looking up from his phone.
"Isn't it Patrick's shift?"
"Meant to be, he's taking Lottie to the vets." Pete nodded slowly, glancing under the counter. He caught sight of a lump snuggled up in blankets in Xlotl's basket under the desk and if his eyes had widened any further they might just have dropped out of his head.
"What's in the basket then?" His brows furrowed; genuine confusion laced his words.
"Hobo." Ryan shrugged, placing his lollipop back in his mouth. A signal he would no longer be talking. Pete frowned.
"A hobo? Like an actual hobo?" Ryan rolled his eyes and patted his thigh. Two brown paws landed on his thigh and a dog's head emerged from under the counter.
"Hobo." Ryan mumbled around the red sucker in his mouth.
"Oh." Pete sighed. Hobo the dog. Of course the dog was called Hobo. This is Ryan we're talking about.
The bell rang as the door swung open. Ryan smiled for the first time since Pete had arrived. Hobo barked at Xlotl and the two puppies bounced about each other happily.
"Speak of the devil."
