"You have a thing for him, Riz?" Another girl nudged, her jacket reading Marty.
"What's it to ya'?" She smiled, pressing one of the legs of a pair of sunglasses to her bottom lip.
"You can't go fooling around with a Scorpion!" Frenchy told her. Laughter erupted that sounded like a familiar I had heard before.
I felt my eyes start to slightly bulge out of my head. Do I tell them, though it was slightly embarrassing to remember the thing Leo and I had? They knew about the Scorpions, but I had little to no knowledge about their cliches here.
I pressed my lips together and decided to hold out.
"Okay, cool it ladies." Frenchy butted in again, now pointing around the table. "Rizzo, Marty, Jan, and this here is Sandy."
Sandy seemed to have a cleaner look but has stayed quiet since I sat down over here. SHe had neatly pinned blonde hair and a long skirt that was flattering on her slim figure.
"I just transferred here at the beginning of this school year." Her Australian accent caught me off guard.
"From Australia?" I asked.
"Yes, how did you kn-" Sandy started.
"It's not rocket science Sandy," Rizzo said, standing from the lunch table.
"Oh wait!" Jan blurted out. "Do you drive a Bel Air?" She propped her head up on her hand that was rolled into a fist. She had thick pigtails that hung on each side of her head.
"I do," I grinned with my lips pressed together thin and tight.
She slapped Rizzo. "She's that pretty brunette we cut off the other day!" Jan's eyes widened.
"Sorry, sugar," Riz said almost half bitterly and half distracted.
"Don't worry about it," I muttered.
Their conversation took a turn to names I didn't yet recognize and I just sat still near Frenchy who would occasionally fill me in on brief pieces of information or flatter me with compliments. They didn't ask me any more questions. I was more of an observer until the end of the lunch period ended and I was happy to skedaddle away just so I could breathe alone for a moment to catch the breath that I felt I was holding in the whole time.
