CHAPTER 1

“Kate?” Nikki called from the other side of my hotel room door.

“Coming!” I answered.

I walked up to the door and opened it wide.

“Hey Nikki, what’s up?” I asked.

“Go get ready, we’re going snowboarding.” Nikki beamed at me.

“Uhh… Sure.”

“I’ll call you as soon as everyone else is ready.”

“Okay. Bye.”

“Bye.”

I shut the door, went inside the bedroom and dressed up warmly. I did it quickly and decided to lie down on my bed for a bit.

It was almost Christmas, and we decided to take a vacation from work. By we, I meant my friends Nikki Smythe, Allie Burton, and I, plus their boyfriends. Allie’s boyfriend, Josh Hutcherson didn’t have work that week, and Nikki’s boyfriend, Zayn Malik’s band, One Direction, was given a month off, so the two guys decided to come with us on our trip to Lake Tahoe.

I know right? Even I, wonder how my friends stumbled upon those guys. I mean, come on, those are two of the most wanted celebrities these days. How in the world did that happen? But, of course, my friends happiness comes first. So I won’t really care if they dated a hobo from the street, just as long as they’re happy.

“JONES! LET’S GO!!” Allie yelled, causing me to snap back to reality.

“I’ll be right out!” I yelled back.

I shot up from bed and walked out my hotel room door. Just as I did, I saw Allie waiting by my door, Nikki and Zayn were walking out of their hotel room, while Josh was locking up the hotel room he shared with Allie.

“Where to?” I asked.

“Board rental shop.” Zayn answered.

“Well, duh. How’d we snowboard without snowboards?” Josh chuckled.

Allie and Nikki facepalmed, we started off to the elevator, rode down to the lobby, drove to the hill where we’ll go boarding and went out to the chilly winter air.

“We’ll get boards for us. Kate? Snowboarding or skiing?” Josh asked.

“Snowboarding!” I answered.

“Okay.”

“We’ll get ski’s.” Nikki and Allie chorused.

“Uhh… I’ll get tickets for the cable cars.” I added.

“Let’s do this!” Zayn exclaimed.

We all went on our separate ways. I walked over to the ticket booth for the cable cars. There was a pretty long line and it took some time before I got to the front of the line.

“Good morning. How may I help you?” The cashier asked.

“Uhh… Five tickets for the cable cars, please?” I answered.

“One way or two?”

“Just one.”

“Here you go.” She handed me the tickets. “That’s two dollars each. Ten dollars, total.”

I reached into my coat’s front pocket, produced a twenty dollar bill, and handed it to the cashier. She gave me the change, and smiled.

“Thank you, ma’am. Enjoy.” She said.

“Thanks.” I smiled back.

I left the booth and started walking back to my friends.

I was enjoying the scenery on my right when I suddenly bumped into someone and the stuff I was holding fell on the snow covered ground.

“Oops. I’m sorry. I wasn’t looking.” I said , crouching down to pick up the fallen tickets.

“It’s okay. It was my fault as well. Sorry.” A guy’s voice answered.

From the corner of my eye, I saw him picking up the other tickets as well. He stood up and I looked at him.

“The name’s Grant.” He said, reaching out to help me up.

I held on to his hand and stood up as well.

“Kate.” I answered.

“Here you go.” Grant said, handing over the tickets.

“Thanks.”

“No problem, babe.”

“Uhh… Yeah. I gotta go.” I bid, but his beautiful eyes held me captive.

“Sure. Nice meeting you.”

“Likewise. See you around, I guess.”

“Definitely.”

My feet stood firm and I walked over to Nikki, Allie, Zayn and Josh. My friends were eyeing me. Probably wondering what happened. My suspicion was confirmed as I got to them.

“Here’s your board.” Zayn said, handing me a blue snowboard.

“Thanks, Z.” I answered, getting the board.

“Who was that?” Allie asked.

“Grant something.”

“What happened?” Nikki added.

“I bumped into him on my way back, he helped me up. That’s it. Can you stop with the 20 questions already?” I answered, dragging Nikki and Allie to the cable cars.

Zayn and Josh laughed as they followed us. We queued in line for the cable cars and we chatted about the usual stupid stuff.

“Whatever, F.A.” Allie groaned.

“F.A.?” I asked.

“Forever alone!” My friends chorused.

I facepalmed.
