I am a prime example of what NOT to do with updating your stories.
If you want people to stay interested in your books, you need to update them frequently.
You can decide beforehand how often you are going to update. It's a good idea to tell your readers your updating schedule so they know when to expect another chapter.
Once a week is my recommendation, but it depends on how many ongoing series you have and what you have going on in your life.
Got too much stuff going on? Update every other week. Don't have anything going on ever? Update every day or every other day. Whatever works for you.
But don't overwork yourself with updating. Don't stress if you can't publish on your scheduled day. Things happen. Just tell your readers that you won't make the update day.
And if you find that you can't keep up with your schedule, it's okay to change it to make it easier for you. Remember, you are more important than your books.
From what I've seen, the older one gets, the less one updates.
When I first started writing in 8th grade, I published a chapter of AMS almost every day. Even when I was writing TDM at the same time, I was still publishing several times a week.
Then when I got into 9th grade and I started TGW and TDN, I had to lower my update frequency because I started to get busier with things. I updated TGW two-three times a week, and TDN once a week.
Then TFOM rolled around near the end of 9th grade, and I had to publish that and TDN once a week.
I kept up with the once a week schedule for both series until near the end of 10th grade. That's where I started to fail, and publish every other week or so.
Now I'm in 11th grade, and I've been publishing once every 3-4 weeks.
I only have myself to blame tbh. Or maybe I can blame age. Cuz I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who stopped updating frequently when I got older *cough*outkookdrive*cough*
*cough*bend1999*cough*
*cough*paulfrank123*cough*So yeah. If you don't update frequently, your readers will eventually lose interest. And you don't want that.
So establish an updating schedule. Or don't. What do I know? Apparently nothing because I can't follow one.
Authors, feel free to leave suggestions on how to keep up with frequent updates here.
