To feel a sense of belonging is paramount.

Camila knows that, yet she has felt alienated from her peers since a young age. She's aware the reason she doesn't fit in is largely because she comes from a radically different household and therefore has no chance of relating or connecting with anyone her age.

Dinah and Ally are the exception to the rule, and even though their families are church goers as well, Camila has noticed that they aren't as strict on their daughters as Camila's are. Of course, there are a set of completely different expectations on the pastor's kid and it's nothing she can escape.

Perhaps it's the reason that she, unlike her peers, genuinely enjoy going to school and learning something new every day. Here at school, she escapes the church, her overbearing parents and all the expectations to some degree. She doesn't have to be prim and proper and calculate every word that falls from her lips. Sure, a lot of the kids from her classes side-eyes her and wrongly believes that she thinks she's above them, but her teachers adore her for the way her mind worked. She didn't have to pretend to be someone else in front of them or be terrified to make mistakes, they saw her as a young human being expanding and growing and learning from her mistakes.

It's freeing, and Camila doesn't care that kids think she's a teacher's pet who constantly sucks up to them. It's not her fault that she's her teachers' favorite because she shows them decent respect in classrooms and pays attention to what they teach and does her best to follow their guidelines.

Camila's favorite subject is without Biology without competition. She finds the organism and the complex biological systems an endless fascination of hers-it one of the things that causes her to stop and praise God for his creations.

She's excited about the big Biology assignment, right up until she's paired with Iris Campbell.

The thing is, Iris Campbell doesn't hide her dislike for Camila and everything she stands for. They shared a religion class last year where Iris was outspoken about her belief in nothing and how she thought religious people were 'sheeple' who followed orders from a 'mystical guy' in the sky, and Camila had made a feeble attempt to explain why religion meant so much for her, but Iris had sneered and mocked her for it.

And perhaps Camila could hope that they could put their differences aside to work together for a good grade, but Iris has never showed interest in Biology. She always shows up late to the class, sleeps in the back of the classroom and rarely knows what's going on when the teacher calls on her.

It's a mystery to Camila what their teacher, Mr. Russel was thinking other than a wishful hope that perhaps Camila would inspire Iris to work harder.

Camila decides to be positive about it and seeks for the silver lining; maybe through this, Iris can realize that there's more to Camila than just being the preacher's kid and they'll reach a place of mutual respect for each other's belief.

With that thought in mind and a bright smile on her lips, Camila approaches Iris when the bell signals the end of the class and the kids file out of the room. Iris packs her things in record time and is already half-way out of the door before Camila catches up to her.
