Guess who's still alive!

Hi everyone. I've been MIA for the last like six months ?? I got struck with life and the worst case of writer's block. I'm sorry for disappearing without a word like that, but I'm mostly back now!

This is a shit chapter and much shorter than I intended, but I wanted to get something out for you guys! I hope you still find joy in it.

Chapter VIIII

Camila has become reckless, and it's no surprise that her parents caught her. They weren't amused that she'd skipped bible studies. Camila fed them a lie that she went to the pharmacy to get painkillers and then met Dinah on her way home and lost track of time. The lie fell smoothly from her lips, but her mother was skeptical. The irritation Camila felt must've slipped into her voice because her mother slapped her so hard, her head spun.

Now they're going to monitor her even closer. They're going to breathe down her neck, and she won't be able to sneak around for a while.

Not that it matters. She regrets hanging with Lauren and her friends and being persuaded to smoke weed. Normani's words echoes in her ear, then Dinah's and maybe there's truth to their words—maybe this isn't her. But if she is neither the obedient, church-loving, God-fearing daughter, nor the rebellious, weed-smoking, sexually active heathen, then who is she?

She supposes she isn't the only one grappling with an identity crisis. There's no hope of her ever grasping any sense of self as long as she continues to be controlled by her parents. She needs to get out and experience the world.

She wishes she knew how to break free.

The next day in school, she focuses on her classes and pretends to be fine. She must not have mastered that skill, because Ally and Dinah ask her what's wrong. She says nothing, because how can she tell them that she can't stop thinking about Lauren? Lauren who looks at her from across the cafeteria with a frown while Camila pretends to be deeply engrossed by her tuna sandwich.

After lunch, she's getting her books for the next period when someone clomps their hands down on her shoulder, so sudden that she releases a squeak of fright. She turns to face her assaulter and an amused Lucy looks back.

She's wearing criminally short shorts and an off-shoulder top that shows off sun-kissed shoulders. It's a wonder how she gets away with that outfit considering the school's unofficial clothes policy.

"Sorry, didn't mean to scare you," She smirks and shrugs, "That's a lie. I totally meant to scare you."

Camila eyes her warily, unsure of what the girl wants with her. She's surprised Lucy is willingly speaking to her at all after the way she treated her last night.

"Um. Ok."

Lucy rolls her eyes and leans against the locker as she crosses her arms. "So, I hear there's trouble in paradise?"

Camila takes a deep breath and closes her locker. "I don't want to talk about it."

Lucy grabs her arm before she can walk away, "Well, that's a fucking shame, because we're going to talk."

"But I have class!" Camila protests as the bell rings, but Lucy pays her no heed as she drags her off to a secluded alcove.

"Calm down. I'm sure your perfect attendance won't be affected," she says with a somewhat mocking tone. "Ok, Listen, church girl. Lauren has been in a shitty mood all day, because apparently the two of you lovebirds had a fight about her...hobbies."
