VI.
Dinah's face is painted with shock. Then confusion, then anger.
"What the fuck are you doing? Get away from her!" she snarls and charges threateningly at Lauren.
Camila's eyes widen as realizes with horror that Dinah thinks Lauren is doing something wrong to her, and she jumps between them. "No! Dinah, stop."
Dinah screeches to a halt and she looks at her with a lost expression.
"Camila?" her gaze drags over the younger girl's frame, and Camila is struck with self-consciousness, knowing that Dinah's piercing eyes will pick up on her flushed cheeks, swollen lips and slightly disarrayed hair. She'll know what Camila has done, right there on the roof with another girl.
She wishes God would strike her down as she deserves.
"What the hell is going on?"
Camila's heart is pounding in her ear and her stomach is a tight, nauseous knot of dread. She berates herself for being so careless with the knowledge that anyone could walk out on them at any moment. She doesn't know if it's better that it was Dinah, or worse. Not yet, at least.
"I think that is pretty obvious," Lauren drawls with a cocky smirk as she comes up behind Camila and curls her fingers around her waist.
Dinah looks positively disturbed, and Camila wriggles out of Lauren's grasp.
"Can you leave us?" she asks Lauren, "Please?"
Lauren studies her for half a second and for a moment it appears as if she's going to lean in and kiss her. However, Camila tilts her face to the floor.
"Alright," Lauren says. "I'll see you later, baby."
The pet name that would under other circumstances makes cause a whooping feeling down Camila's stomach now makes her wince. She doesn't dare lift her face to look at her best friend. In fact, neither of them say a word and there's only tight tension left as Lauren saunters off.
As soon as the door closes behind Lauren, Dinah bursts,
"Baby?"
Camila flinches at the unadulterated incredulity her words contain, and she lifts her gaze to meet Dinah's storming honey brown ones.
"Please, Camila, tell me that you have a good explanation and this isn't what I think it is."
Camila dropped her gaze back on the floor, hot-white shame punching her in the gut and she mumbles out,
"It's not what you think."
"Oh, it isn't?" Dinah scoffs unconvinced. "So you aren't secretly hooking up with Lauren fucking Jauregui? You were just exchanging saliva as part of your Biology assignment."
Her sarcasm is thick and lethal, and Camila has no words to defend herself.
"Dinah," she pleads softly. She doesn't know what's she's pleading for, but she knows she isn't interested in this confrontation.
