Chapter VIII
Where are you?
Camila's phone vibrates with the text on a Sunday afternoon in the middle of bible studies, and she discreetly reads it out of sight of Mr. Albert. She can't help the smile that tugs at her lips upon discovering it's from Lauren.

Come hang out with me
Camila bites her bottom lip. She genuinely wants to, but she can't skip the class and risks her parents finding out.
I can't
Yes, you can, baby. You must be bored to death. We'll have fun
"Who are you texting?" Peter, who's sat next to her, whispers and curiously glances down at her phone. She startles a bit and immediately locks the phone screen, shooting him a wary smile.
"It's just Dinah," she lies.
He appears to accept the answer and smiles at her, before he turns his attention back on Mr. Albert who's talking about what heaven looks like. Right now, Camila is more interested in what heaven with Lauren looks like. She makes a split decision and leans in to whisper in Peter's ear,
"I'm not feeling well. I think I'm going home early."
Peter spills his brown eyes at her in concern and excuses them for Mr. Albert before leading her outside. Camila eagerly sucks in the fresh air and turn to look at Peter.
"Are you okay?" He asks, "Do you want me to drive you home?"
"No, no. I just think I'm coming down with a cold. I'll be fine. I only live ten minutes from here," she assures. "We can't both miss the class."
He touches her elbow gingerly and Camila struggles not to flinch away. "Are you absolutely sure? I can drop you off and be back within five minutes."
She doesn't as guilty about the lying and the cheating as she thought she would. A part of her believes that her parents forced her into this situation, so they should be the ones feeling bad.
She responds Peter, firmly with a shake of her head, "No. Really, I'll be alright. Go back in and listen for the both of us so you can tell me what I missed later. And tell your parents I'm sorry I can't make it."
The Rosses had invited her over for dinner and she's happy she's getting out of it. The last thing she wants is to repeat another embarrassing, boundary-crossing dinner like the one with her parents.
Peter looks reluctant, but he can tell Camila has made up her mind. He squeezes her arm and nods. "Okay. Get home safe and rest up. I'll call you."
"Okay. Bye." She turns on her heels and pulls out her phone as soon as she rounds the corner.
"Hi baby," Lauren's voice is husky and tantalizing and sends a rush of warmth through Camila.
Camila's mouth automatically pulls up in a smile and her gaze darts around to make sure no one is watching her. "Come pick me up at the dollar store."
