Chapter 2: Run Away
"What do you want?" asked Sariah, turning to the man from the train. His hat was no longer covering his face and Sariah could see his stubble on his face and dark, scary eyes.
"To know where you're going," growled the man.
"Nowhere," Sariah said hastily.
The man smiled. "I know you're lying kid. Now, I don't want to fight, so just-"
"Stay away!" yelled Sariah. Panicking, she willed a crate to go for the man.
The man swatted it away like a cat swats at a ball of yarn. Sariah made the crate gently fall to the ground. She was still breathing heavily but she was now under better control of it. She looked straight at the man. He had a slightly amused face, and he looked... Impressed about something.
"So you have a little control, huh?" asked the man.
Sariah gulped. She'd given herself away. This man was going to turn her in to the police, she knew it. He would tell them she had tried to kill him with a crate, and she would be arrested. Then they would know who she was, what she'd done, what she had done so many years ago when she was 9... And she would be in bigger trouble than she had ever been in before.
The man noticed the fear in Sariah's eyes. He smiled. "Don't worry kid," he chuckled. "I already knew."
Sariah stared at the man with wide eyes. She hadn't used her powers around this man until just now. Unless she had lost control during her sleep and had made her duffel bag move or some other bizarre thing. Sometimes she couldn't control it in her sleep.
"How?" Sariah finally managed to whisper.
The man shrugged. "I know people that know."
"Stalker!" shouted Sariah. She suddenly stopped thinking sensibly. All that she wanted to do was get away from this man without a fight. It was obvious that he was much stronger than her. She could tell by his muscular build. Before she could think, she put on a burst of speed, and then, she ran.
"Wait, kid!" yelled the man. He ran towards Sariah, but she willed herself to throw him to the side. He went flying towards some sailors and some others on the dock. They screamed and scattered, and the man landed roughly. There was major confusion as the people crowded together, as though to protect themselves. The man just stood up, brushing himself off as though he had been doing some gardening.
Sariah looked behind her to see where the man was. He was just starting to run. Sariah drew in a deep breath and ran faster than she'd ever run before. She felt herself being stopped by an invisible force, but Sariah threw up a force field and the power was gone.
"Please, Sariah, wait!" called a girl's voice.
This voice was new to Sariah. It sounded kind, and nice, and really concerned. But this was too weird for Sariah. Why was she being stalked? How did everyone know her name? She just wanted to get away. Maybe turning herself into the cops wouldn't be a bad thing. She could tell them about the strange man from the train and the girl. She just wouldn't mention a few things, like how she kept hearing the voice of a man she had met at the train station.
No, the police would ask too many questions. She was going to have to do what she did best: run.
"Come back, kid!" yelled the man from the train. "We aren't gonna hurt ya!"
And then she heard it. "Sariah," said the voice of the man from the train station.
"I said stop it!" shouted Sariah to the voice, wherever it was. Several startled people stared, then scattered when they noticed Sariah running at them full speed. Sariah knew she was being pursued by the man from the train. What she didn't know was that he had a friend with him.
