Chapter 16: Like Quicksand

I know the ending of chapter 15 is still torturing you.... And to torture you further, the chapter will not begin where it left off but rather start at the mansion. You're welcome.

"Professor!" cried Jean, hurrying towards the Professor. "Professor, have you seen Sariah?"

"No, I haven't," said the Professor.

"She hasn't come back from school," frowned Jean. "She told me was staying behind for class or something but she wasn't specific."

"That can't be good." The Professor frowned.

"Maybe... maybe there's something in her room to give us a clue about where she went."

Jean and the Professor hastened to Sariah's room. Jean immediately went over to Sariah's bookcase and searched through the pages of her books for writing, slips of paper, or any notes that seemed of importance.

The Professor was searching around Sariah's nightstand when he suddenly pulled a paper out of Sariah's nightstand, read it, and gave out a big gasp.

Jean rushed over and read the paper. As soon as she finished, she gasped. Her face was pale.

"There were no auditions for a play," whispered Jean. "They didn't have the funds for a play this year. Professor, she's been lured into some trap. We have to go get her!"

The Professor nodded, looking more afraid then Jean was, and that was saying something.

He and Jean hastily went downstairs, calling to everyone to suit up.

"What's going on?" asked JD, running out of the living room. "Are you going on a mission? Can I come too?"

"I'm sorry JD, this is an emergency," said Jean. "We're afraid Sariah's been lured into a trap and that there's gonna be a lot of powerful mutants there."

"What?" JD asked, confused.

"It's too dangerous for you," said Jean. "You have to stay here, with the younger students."

"But if Sariah's in trouble, I want to go help! She means a lot to me too!"

"But it's too dangerous! You can't fight, or defend yourself, and Sariah would kill me if you got hurt!"

"I don't care! I WANT TO HELP!"

"No, JD! STAY HERE!"

JD gave an angry yell and ran out of the room while shouting, "I just want to fit in! Dang it, I wanna fit in!"

Jean sighed. He would understand sooner or later.

Sariah looked at the crowd of people. She knew that the Brotherhood wasn't really there to audition for a play and that Ms. Parrish was not really Ms. Parrish.

"No," Sariah whispered. A million things were going on in her head. She had been tricked... it was like she was in quicksand. If she put up a struggle she would be less likely to escape unscathed. If she put up a fight, she was in for it.

But she balled her fists anyway, glaring around at everyone she saw.

"You aren't going to win this," she hissed. "I'm perfectly capable of getting help." She tapped her head, a smug, triumphant look on her face.

"Oh, your powers won't be of any help to you," smiled Pietro. Standing by the door, Sariah could see a girl, dressed in Gothic clothing, which an aura of light floating above her hands. Despite herself, Sariah couldn't help but be... curious.
