The letter made me smile but it also made me think. When I turned my phone on, I had two messages from both Scott and Leah. Whereas, I had about twenty from Atticus and he even came to my house. He stuck with me for the entire day watching movies just because I was upset and didn't show up for school on Friday. Where my friends not concerned? I have never missed a day but they seemed to think it was normal and not question whether something was wrong. Maybe what I overheard was true.
I walked into English and didn't even bother fighting when Atticus sat down beside me. I was too busy in my thoughts anyway. Scott walked in and I knew he was glaring at Atticus.
"Move." Scott sneered
Atticus ignored him and that just riled Scott up even more. This continued until Mr. J made Scott find a different seat. My thoughts were far from being about English and I don't think anyone noticed. I just did my best to continue to write the notes. I felt Atticus grab my hand and, oddly enough, I didn't pull away. A slip of paper was placed on my desk, covering the paper that I was writing on.
I don't know what happened but it's obviously affecting you a lot. It's going to be okay, darlin.
I smiled softly, folding the paper and getting back to the notes. I squeezed his hand a bit in a way to say thank you.
Scott was ranting during study hall about Atticus. I wasn't really focused on them. I just knew that Leah was freaking out as much as Scott. Especially when it got to the part where he took my hand in his.
"What were you thinking?" Leah asked
"Hey darlin." Atticus said
I turned to face him and I made up my mind.
"Can you take me home?" I asked softly
He searched my face for any immediate signs that I was going to cry before nodding.
"Of course." Atticus agreed
I grabbed my books before walking out of the library. I could feel their stares on my back but just kept walking.
