It was a cold night in Upstate New York; the winds had picked up throughout the evening and it wasn't bearable to stand outside for longer than three minutes.
But even with the winds, it was fairly quiet outside. Inside the Avengers Compound, the heating was on and most of the workers had gone home for the holidays. The heroes that made that place home were sitting around the common room, the room itself sparkling with decor for the holiday season.
It was as peaceful as it could get. One agent who was just about to leave to see his family heard a cry as he walked outside but soon after, he dismissed it as nothing. The agent pushed through the main door, it staying open for a second too long after he exited and left.
Steve Rogers, the nice man that he occasionally was, walked around the compound to check for any more agents who should be leaving instead of working. Then, he too heard a cry but this time, it was from inside the building. A look of confusion fluttered across his face as he walked towards the area of the noise. The sight he saw shocked him.
Cowering in the corner of the wall near the main doors was a little girl, almost four by the looks of it, her arms wrapped tightly around herself as she shivered every two seconds. Steve approached her carefully, slowly reaching out his hand towards her.
"Hey," He whispered softly, the little girl meeting his gaze a little frightened. "Hey, it's okay." Steve kneeled next to her, wiping away the fallen tears on her cheeks. She sniffed, keeping her eyes on the blonde man.
"Are you lost?" He asked her and she nodded.
Steve noticed her shivering body and immediately held out his hands. "Come on, let's get you warm."
The little girl nodded again, climbing into his arms and snuggling closer to his chest seeing as he was wearing a warm sweater. She sighed, holding onto Steve tightly as he carried her towards the common room of the compound. He could feel her shivering slightly in his arms; it was given though as she was only wearing a t-shirt and thin pants.
"What's your name sweetheart?" Steve asked her softly. The little girl looked up at him.
"Lily Moore," She whispered, fidgeting with his sweater.
"I'm Steve ... Where are your parents?" He asked. Surely her parents wouldn't have just left her in the cold.
"I don't know. Mama said she would come back but she didn't. Papa and mama are gone," Lily told Steve. His heart almost broke in two after hearing that. How could parents just leave their only child like that? It was crude; absolutely horrid.
The idle chatter of the Avengers could be heard from outside and as Steve walked in with the child in his arms, all eyes turned to him.
"Who is that?" Tony asked him first, getting up to get a closer look at the child. He almost smiled at the pure innocence on her face as she stared back at the billionaire.
"This is Lily Moore. I found her inside the compound by the entrance shivering from the cold," Steve explained.
"Where's her parents?" Clint asked, sitting up to get a closer look at the girl. Lily pushed herself further into Steve's arms, her tiny hands grabbing the front of his sweater.
The super soldier made a face, a hint of anger mixed into it. "They ... left her," He whispered the last part.
