Emma picked at her sandwich as she slumped in her seat at her cafeteria table. Her second day of school was just as miserable as the first, only today she had someone wallow in misery with. Jenny. But Jenny was in a completely different universe, babbling on about some sort of TV show.
"Emma!" Jenny exclaimed as she slammed her hands down on the table, startling Emma. Emma sat up straight. "Are you even listening to me?"
"Um, totally. Fictional character death. They always suck."
"Ugh, that too. But that's not what I was talking about. I was- nevermind, you don't want to hear me talk about my first world problems. Ooh, but I want to know about yours!" Jenny said as she perked up, all of the sudden excited about something. "Okay, that gorgeous hunk over there has been eyeing you all lunch hour," she said as she nudged Emma and nodded in the direction of Daniel. Emma groaned.
"No he hasn't," Emma said looking over and when they made eye contact he smiled at her.
"Holy crap go talk to him, he is totally flirting with you!" Jenny said right before she got up and dragged Emma from her comfortable slouching position.
"How is making eye contact considered flirting?" asked Emma. She was pushed on her way and before she could turn back Daniel approached her.
"You know, you can't avoid me forever," Daniel said with a smile. His smile was so charming, Daniel was so charming.
"I-" Emma stammered. "I can't do this right now. Can we do this later?" Emma sounded like they were boyfriend and girlfriend who had been hanging on by a thread for the past two weeks but in reality, she had just met him.
"There's a party here at the school tonight, a kind of introduction for all of the students to get together, will you come and talk with me there?" Emma's heart was beating so hard she thought it was going to explode out of her chest. Had he just asked her out on a date?
"Fine," she said right before she walked away. In her heart, Emma knew she wanted to go with Daniel, but she was trying to push him away. She didn't know if she wanted a relationship but she knew she was catching feelings for Daniel and she was afraid of that. It was all so confusing.
The rest of lunch and classes went by slowly but soon enough it was time for Emma to show up to the party. She showed up in a casual look of a light blue t-shirt and jeans. She wandered around in the gym crowded with people, looking around for Daniel, giving a nervous smile to whoever looked at her.
Someone tapped her on the shoulder and she spun around, thinking it was Daniel but instead low and behold stood a makeup-caked, lip gloss coated, hair sprayed, punch drinking Brittney.
"Stay away from Daniel. He's mine" Brittney said, narrowing her eyes.
"What?!" Emma snickered. "Oh geez," she laughed. "First of all, I'm not staying away from anybody, I can talk to whoever I want. Second of all, I thought that you were with that guy who had his arms wrapped all around you yesterday so how is Daniel yours?"
"Okay listen to me you little bitch. I'm not playing. I want Daniel and I get what I want so when I tell you to back the hell off you back the hell off," Brittney sneered. Her mascara-coated eyes glared into Emma's.
"Sorry, but you can't control me. In some alternate dimension, you might have this crazy idea where you can manipulate and control other people as well as get exactly what you want but this is real life, honey. So you better stop trying to tell me what to do because in real life you can't control other people and you can't get everything that you want," Emma said as she shrugged and turned around to walk away. Her heart was beating rapidly.
