I shrugged to mother, unsure if I was capable of handling this sort of mission. Protecting someone is easy, but it's in a place that's unfamiliar to me. Not only that, she's completely different from me. She was raised without the sounds guns firing and watching the death of all her friends. How can I possibly get close to her if we live in separate worlds?
"Are you interested in the job, William?" Grandfather asked me as he came walking up to me. "We don't have any other soldiers that can get close enough to the girl without scaring her off. Of course, we will provide living quarters close to the girl and a team to teach you how to act in society."
I shook my head no. "Before I accept the mission, I need to know more details about the one being targeted. I need to know the situation."
He nodded, "of course. The situation is that Juliet is being targeted by a terrorist organization for the purpose of bribing her father to build them a nuclear weapon that could destroy a whole town. If we could prevent them from taking the girl, that would give us time to move the professor into a safe location and destroy this group. Once the mission is completed, you will be welcomed to return for your next mission."
"Alright, I accept this mission. I'll protect the girl until I die," I told him. He nodded and handed me the information packet that I'll need during the mission. "When do I start?"
"You start when the team is prepared to board the helicopter. The paperwork needs to be completed before you could approach the girl," he told me. I nodded and went to my mother.
"That will give us time to get to know each other better. I want to be with her until it's time to return to the helicopter," I told them. They nodded as mother placed a hand on my shoulder.
She smiled as I took her hand and led her to my room in the base. "William, how did you get that scar on your face?" mother asked me as she cleaned away the dried blood from my cheek carefully, knowing it was still fresh.
"Um... It's a knife wound. I wasn't careful enough when I woke up a friend," was all I told her as I felt out of place once again. It was as if I was six years old again, meeting my mother for the first time. "Mother, I'm sorry if I ever hurt you. Back then, I was never told I had a mother. If I would've known, things would have been different."
She shook her head no, "it wasn't your fault. If only I fought harder to keep you safe away from Damien."
"Mother, before I go away, will you tell me something?" I asked her. She nodded. "Why did you marry Damien?"
That caught her off guard. "Why would you ask a question like that? I did it to meet you. He promised me that I could be apart of your life if I became his." She sounded as if she was keeping something out, but what could it be?
"Ok, I should get ready to go. Could you help me dress like I did not just come from war?" I asked her. She nodded and took the trunk that was sitting in the corner with clean clothes. She pulled out a pair of pants she called Blue Jeans, a black short sleeve shirt, and a grey sweater to go over it. She handed them to me before walking out of the room so I could change. I took off my battle gear and changed into the clothes she picked out. I placed my gear back into the trunk and opened the door. "I feel... different. Almost as if, I shouldn't be wearing this without battle gear underneath."
"You look great. If only we could do something about your scars, then you would fit in with the other kids more. If only I could go with you, but I trust you would come back to me after this mission." She smiled at me, positive on her thought.
"I'm sorry, mother, but after that mission is over, I will stay here and continue working with the team," I told her. She frowned but seemed to understand my desicion.
"Alright, stay safe and listen to your grandfather. Don't do anything dangerous, ok?" she asked me. She wants me to promise her something that she knows I can't keep.
Instead of answering, I hugged her before leaving the room. "William, it's time to depart. The team is prepared and are currently waiting for you in the copter," Sergent Freedmon reported.
I saluted him before saying, "I'm on my way sir. I won't fail this mission." He saluted back with a smile before dismissing me to the helicopter. As I climbed inside, my allies were already sitting in their seats. The leader of the team was a man of about thirty years old with brown hair and brown eyes. Then there was a woman of about twenty eight years old with red hair and brown eyes.
"Your the boy everybody's talking about?" the man told me. I stayed silent as I took a seat away from them. "Do you understand your duty for this mission, kid?"
I looked over at him before answering, "William. My name is William, and yes, I understand the situation. Protect the girl and get her to come here before the terrorists try to attack."
He smirked, "well William, you speak like a soldier, but can you speak like a kid?"
"Kevin, leave him alone! He'll learn everything he needs to soon enough!" the woman told him.
This made him a bit angry, "Alicia, can't you ever stay quiet when nobody's talking to you? I was having a man to man conversation here with William."
I watched them argue over who needs to keep their mouth shut until I eventually got tired of it. "Enough! We are supposed to be a team, but unfortunately, we have nothing in common. As a team, we are supposed to be working together, not against each other. I had led a team consisting of three boys and one girl. We got along just like a team and gained victory in every battle we faced. We shall fail this mission if we do not cooraperate with each other."
After another heated discussion, we seemed to have made a compromise. We all decided to get along considering the fact that we have to work together no matter what. When we landed, we were moved into a car, where we drove toward some tall apartments. Alicia picked up the keys for the room on the top floor of some apartments as I helped Kevin unload the equipment.
