The autumn breeze blew passed the stones aimlessly, dragging along multicolored leaves and leaving them scattered across the grass. The sun shone brightly, almost directly overhead, indicating that noon would soon dong the large clock tower several yards away from where I stood. There was no sound to be heard, no birds, no rustling dead leaves as the wind declined, and no sounds of scattering wildlife or soft cries in the distance. Just the sound of my breathing and the steady thump of my heartbeat.
I had been standing in front of this particular headstone for hours now. I was unable to move or speak what I wanted, so I just stood there, allowing the occasional gust of wind to blow passed me, carrying a few leaves right along with it. I hadn't sat down once. It felt wrong, almost disrespectful.
After all, I'm the reason he's dead.
I kept reading Yamamoto's name over and over again. His first name; Chiyo. His birthday; August 12th. The date of his death... the memento labeled toward the very bottom of the stone.
"Thoughtful friend, loving brother, caring son, a true hero."
My thoughts went out to his sisters and his parents as I stood there. I hadn't seen them since my first year at U.A. High School. I didn't even see them after Yamamoto died. I skipped town.
I abandoned my duty to tell them myself.
I abandoned my duty as a hero in training.
I abandoned everything and everyone with nothing but a vague letter and an empty hospital bed to remember me by.
I never even thought of ever coming back until two weeks ago. Two weeks ago when I stupidly clicked on the news channel. When I was reminded of the responsibilities and unresolved problems I had left behind. When I remembered where my father was buried. Where Yamamoto was buried. Where Aizawa probably laid awake at night wondering why and where I went.
I had heard vague descriptions on what had been happening in Musutafu after my personality split and my absence occurred. Apparently, crime was at an all time high and heroes were struggling to keep up with the sudden heavy workload. My counterpart was out there somewhere running a muck, destroying lives and people, and I found it best for me to leave. I thought that if I left, things would get better for everyone.
But not all of me was gone from Musutafu.
I had stupidly left my other half behind without putting him back in his place.
Another gust of wind blew, and as the sound bled away, the sound of crunching leaves and the vibrations of quickly pounding feet replaced it and prompted me to quickly turn around.
A girl stood before me, clearly out of breath. Her brown hair was at a familiar jawline length, and she had dull, cherry brown eyes that seemed to penetrate right through my skin.
She moved with a purpose as she leapt over a gravestone to tackle into my chest, causing me to stumble back a few steps to catch her and myself. I held my hands out to the sides for balance, blinking blankly at the girl who was too busy clutching to me to notice my discomfort.
"Why are you here?"
The girl's body seemed to tense at the question and she slowly looked up. Her face was seemingly void of expression, but the way her arms still wrapped desperately around my waist convinced me that she was conflicted about something.
"Osoroshi..." She uttered my name, sounding almost confused. "It's... don't you remember me?"
The sound of her voice seemed to set off a orchestra of alarms in my head, but nonetheless I had already known who she was from the start. Breathing out my nose, I grabbed her by the arms and pulled her off of me.
"Karafuru," I deadpanned as my eyes cascaded around her constellation of pale freckles. "It's only been a year."
Her eyes sparkled with tears and her lower lip quavered at my sentence. She looked about my face frantically, glancing from the scar across my nose and to the lack of pigment in my left eye.
"If I had b-been there," she cried softly, bringing both of her hands up to cover her mouth. "I could have —"
"Now isn't the time to get emotional," I said coldly, looking off to the distance as the bell tower donged behind us. "And you didn't answer my question, why're you here?"
She recovered herself momentarily and let her hands fall limp to her sides. "I was... visiting your dad's grave."
I looked on at her stoically at that. She continued.
"I was just leaving, but then I saw you... I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me."
She laughed brokenly at that and I sighed.
"They weren't.." she breathed, finally smiling up at me. I felt my eyebrow twitch.
"Don't set your hopes too high," I deadpanned, walking passed her and toward the gate on the other side of the cemetery. "I don't plan on staying."
"W-what?" She whipped around and followed me.
"It's unfortunate that you were the one to find me so fast," I continued, disregarding her shock as we exited the rusty gate. "I was hoping to have all of class A together at once. I haven't even met with Nezu yet."
"What're you talking about, Osoroshi?" She asked me shakily. "If you don't plan on staying, then why did you come back?"
"That's a stupid question," I bit, approaching the rental car that was parked at the end of the street. I pulled the keys out of my pocket. "Think about it and put the pieces together."
"If this is about me leaving to America without telling you," Karafuru stopped walking and rose her voice, prompting me to halt as I reached my hand out to the driver side door handle. "I'm sorry! I wanted to tell you, but I didn't want you to have to focus on me as well as everything else you had going on."
I flicked my gaze up to her and scowled.
"Don't give yourself so much credit," I hissed, pulling open the car door. "This has nothing to do with you."
"O-Osoroshi!" She cried, latching into the door before I could close it. "C-c'mon, lets talk about thi —"
"Our encounter is to stay between us," I instructed, not looking at her. "I don't want anyone knowing of my return until I see it fit, do you understand?"
Without giving her the opportunity to argue, I yanked the door out of her hands and started the ignition. Despite hearing her yelling at me from outside the window, I stepped on the gas pedal and began to make my way down the street.
With a heavy heart I didn't bother looking back at her. I had to stay focused.
