A reason for staying sane

Two weeks later, Jasper and I had seen a lot of the three teens who called themselves the Losers Club II, apparently their parents were the first ones back in the day. One day in the last week of June, we all had planned to meet up at the town dinner. In a weird way, it was a friendly get together but also a date for Jasper and me. I didn't want to think of it in that way, but I dressed up nonetheless. Wearing my favorite black spider earrings, I made sure to arrive early to talk to Jasper since I knew she'd do the same.

"You brought Lucifer? Really?" For the cat indeed lay curled up on her lap and she stroked his back. "Why not?" I rolled my eyes, knowing perfectly well she knew better. "Whatever, anyway, are you sure this is a good idea?" "Why not?" She said again, accompanying it with a casual shrug. "All we're doing is seeing our new friends at the town dinner. Nothing wrong with that." "I mean making friends, we've always had each other, no one else knows what secrets we hold. What if-" "What if nothing. For the time being, we'll hang out with them like we're normal and when it's time to tell, we'll tell. In the meantime, stop being such a wet blanket and smile like the clown you usually are." I sighed, despite her brash nature, Jasper always knew what to say.

At the cling of the door bell, we looked up to see the Losers Club II come through the door, Alice waved upon spotting us. A little later, after ordering our food, conversation started.

"I came here to this town when my dad decided it was time to slow down. He's a famous comedian you know, been on all the popular TV shows." "We know Jake," Alice said, rolling her eyes, "you've told us a billion times." He smiled proudly. "I like to boast where I get my irresistible charm." He cast a playful wink in Jasper's direction, she smiles and shakes her head slightly, Lucifer growls on her lap. "Aw shut up will ya?" Jake snaps at the feline. Her smiles instantly vanished and never reappeared for the rest of the meet up.

"S-so L-Lu-Lucy, w-wh-what's y-your l-li-life li-like?" I froze at George's question, eyes briefly darting to Jasper's observant gaze. 'Cover up.' She mouthed, I nod ever so slightly.

"Well, my mother's like any other mother; a worker of small jobs that pay well enough to bring food on the table. She's very pretty, with wavy black hair and blue eyes that shine like the moon, soft and gentle." "What about your father?" Alice's question stopped me short, yet I find I know exactly what to say.

"I never knew him, he went on business when I was younger and I haven't seen him since."

The silence that consumed us was unbearable, I felt George's hand gently clasp mine under the table, comforting me in a way I had not expected.
