First of all, Jon's a drinker

First of all, Jon's a drinker.  Years of drinking have built up and it takes quite a few drinks to get to 'drunk', but once he's there, he's a whole different person to his usual 'helpful asshole' and becomes 'funny and happy'.  They say alcohol brings out one's true personality, so maybe Jon really is a bubbly and high - spirited guy, maybe the 'asshole' is just a product of an even bigger asshole family.  Problems are a lot easier to handle when the world's dizzy and your senses are numb, you forget about all your worries.  Jon enjoys this feeling a lot.  Someone help him, he's probably sad.

Despite the constant flow of alcohol in his system, Jon is actually a damn smart guy

Despite the constant flow of alcohol in his system, Jon is actually a damn smart guy.  He chooses a good buzz over smarts because of his family.  His parents put him down and suddenly that beer looks a lot more appealing than trying to appease mom
and dad — a lot easier too.  Sometimes his intelligence slips out without knowing, he'll answer a problem a little too quickly or say something that'll make you go "how and why does he know that??".  Jon's intelligence is an uncommon thing to witness, but just be aware he's not a total idiot.
Undermining his smarts is the quickest way to get the asshole in him to come out.  He doesn't hold back on his words and will use big words to spin you in circles.  It's bad enough he has to deal with his parents doing it to him,  the last thing he needs is his friends doing it too.

Jon's a good friend — by slightly lowered standards at least

Jon's a good friend — by slightly lowered standards at least. He's there for a shoulder to cry on or to lend an ear to listen to how 'josh was being a total ass today'.  Jon likes to listen to other people's problems because it helps him forget his own.
Jon's a ride or die guy, he's the one you hit up for a late night talk or maybe you wanna slash josh's tires and need some help and/or a getaway car.  Either way, Jon is there with a sharp knife and foot on the ignition.
His situation is ironic at times.  Jon is telling people how to deal with their parents when he can't even deal with his own.  It's the kind of thing where you help someone out with their problems because you don't want them to go through the same thing as you.

Mom and Dad are never impressed, it's his whole life story.  Jon wanted nothing more to impress his parents, but nothing he did was ever good enough.  Around highschool is when he started to break, Jon would start talking back at them and when no one was looking, he'd sneak a beer.  It helped him out a lot, the stress from his parents and school would become more manageable, but when he didn't have an access to it, his attitude became sour.  Jon can't quite remember when he became a 'wild one', but he knows it helped about as much as the alcohol did, knowing there were kids almost equally messed up as he was, another escape from home. They felt more like family than his actual one.
