My body was drained from the crying I had been doing. I was so emotionally exhausted with confusion and humiliation that I didn't even have the strength to crawl back into bed and fall asleep. Instead, I drifted off to sleep on the floor, my back against the hard wall.
I awoke a few hours later as I heard my door open. I couldn't see who it was, but the silhouette I saw was one of a short girl. Her eyes searched the bed and continued to search the room trying to find me.
I met her gaze.
She smiled and stepped into the room flicking the light switch on. As soon as she saw my puffy red eyes, she swiftly walked towards me and plopped her self on the floor in front of me. She took my hand in hers and squeezed it.
I looked up at this little girl in shock. I looked into her brown eyes and I burst out crying once again. I don't know why, but the small gesture of coming to comfort me made me emotional.
Sure I had just gotten deserted by my husband of one day, but who knows what these orphans had been through?
The little girl stood up and I thought she would leave the room, but she came to my side and hugged me.
I held my arms onto hers.
I didn't come to the orphanage to drag everyone else into my sorrow. I came here to be with the orphans.
A gentle knock on the door snapped me out of my thoughts.
It was Ayesha.
As soon as she saw me, she walked over. She spoke to the little girl in her mother tongue and before I knew it they were on either side of me, helping me stand up. My body, feeling weak and faint, leaned into Ayesha, who had no problem with keeping me standing upright. Instead of walking me over to my bed, they walked me out of my room and towards the bathroom.
'W..w...what?' I could barely manage spitting out a single sentence and that one word was barely audible. It seemed Ayesha did hear me and she looked at me, assuring me she knew what she was doing.
They helped me onto one of the seats and when I looked around I realized I was in the ablution area.
I was now more confused than ever.
'Atti, pray salaah you?' Ayesha asked me. It made more sense now. That little girl was probably sent to wake me up for the pre dawn prayer.
I nodded my head at Ayesha and slowly reached for the tap. Freezing cold water flowed out and I flinched.
It was so cold, but there was nothing I could do about it. Ayesha had left me with the little girl whose name I still didn't know. 'Name? Naam?' I asked, hoping she would understand.
She looked up at me from beneath her long lashes and cleared her throat 'Laiba.'
I smiled down at her 'That's a very pretty name.' I wasn't sure if she understood me but she smiled and nodded her head.
I dried my self off with a thin piece of material they used as a hand towel, then I gestured for the little girl to lead the way to the prayer area. She held my hand and once again the action stunned me.
