I babbled on and on spilling all the details of my less than perfect honeymoon to Faseeha. She sat and listened as I aimlessly spoke about the relevant and irrelevant events that occurred in India.I spoke freely and openly, knowing she wouldn't make any judgements about the entire situation until I finished talk and when I finally did finish, Faseeha held out her hand and placed it on top of mine looking at me with a shocked expression.
I had to catch my breathe after telling her my version of the story. My throat felt dry and I was panting from lack of oxygen.
Faseeha spoke beckoning the waiter over. 'Could we have a glass of water please?'
The water was back in a flash placing the glass on the table. I gulped it down within seconds. It calmed me down and my throat felt a little better. My eyes met Faseeha who was deep in thought.
'It just- It just doesn't make sense. Why would Fayaaz do this? Nobody forced him to get married. He wanted to. He willingly told my parents that he wanted to settle down. And I mean- I mean it was a shock because nobody pictured my brother wanting to settle down while studying and I-I- I just don't know Attiyah. Im just so sorry.'
I nodded, acknowledging her apology.
I didn't want or need her apology.
I didn't even want or need an apology from Fayaaz.
I just wanted an explanation.
All my life, I had always been that kind of person who asks why.
And now, when I needed my 'whys' to be answered, the only person who could answer them was sitting in London!
'Attiya.' She said my name in a whisper. 'Im really sorry, for what Taskiyah said earlier.'
'Why would she say that? Does your family really believe I would do something like that?'
Faseeha sighed. 'My family, they're a little different, always has been that way. My father, as you have seen, is humble and down to earth. He never let the success of the business get to him. His sisters on the other hand, are just something else. Filled with greed for money, they cant wait till Fayaaz takes over the family business and expands it. Whatever my brother says is like the law. So when Fayaaz told them about- about this fiasco...' She trailed off.
I was scared to hear the rest of her sentence to be honest. What did her aunties do?
What did her cousins say?
What would people think of me?
I rubbed my temples in an attempt to get rid of the headache that was starting to pound in my head.
'So, Taskiyah is your cousin?'
'My second cousin and Fayaaz and her have always been close, so she knew along with my immediate family. He had told her.'
This was all too much to take in. I couldn't live my life in fear of ever bumping into any of the Adams and having a shout down like today!
Faseeha noticed my worried look and tried to calm them.
