Secrets

Chapter 9

It was as if on instinct I jumped in front of Kai, trying in vain to protect him. The guards circled around us, we were trapped. There has to be something I can do, I am the daughter of the Commander after all.
"Stand down. Now!"
"We do not take orders from you", said the guard closest to me.
"You will regret it if you disobey me."
"We only take orders from the Commander. He has ordered us to take the boy."
I could feel Kai trembling behind me. No. This can't be it. I HAVE to protect him. Suddenly everything went dark, red took over the irises of my eyes. All I could think of was saving Kai. In an instant I reacted, I grabbed the guard closest to me and twisted his arm behind his back, and dislocated it from his arm socket. I release him, he falls to the ground in agony. I expect the other guards to attack, but they don't. All they can do is stand in disbelief with their mouths agape. I retrieve the gun from the guard I have sent to the floor. I point it at my next target and pull the trigger. That seems to snap the guards back to reality and they focus their guns on me. I work my way back to Kai and keep him close. I point and shoot. Again. Again. And again with no remorse. The guards try and fight back but they are no match for my skill. I pick them off one by one until there are only ten remaining. All of them quivering, now knowing they cannot defeat me. We must leave before more troops come.
"Tell your Commander that he will have to get through me to get him", I say gesturing toward Kai. One of the remaining guards speaks up.
"Your father will be very angry with you for not completing your mission."
My father. He just called him my father. I can't stop myself from doing what happens next. I sprint to him, take a knife from my boot, and hold it against his throat. I can feel him trembling beneath my blade. My voice comes in a tone I am not familiar with, a tone that scares me.
"He is not my father. He will never be my father. And you will NEVER call him my father again."
The guard urges his head to nod. Something takes over my actions, my assassin instincts kick in. I slide the blade across his throat in one fatal swipe. He falls to the ground, his body silent and numb.
